Alex Cabal

Alex Cabal

Alex has a BFA in Digital Media from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.

Following an interesting fine art-inspired method using Photoshop, Alex sketches everything first to establish a composition, then blocks in her colours using shapes. The details are refined via the line work and in the final step textures are added and the colours are tweaked to get the contrast right.

Colour, contrast, graphical lines, beauty, eye contact and flowers wherever possible are all hallmarks of Alex Cabal’s style. She loves drawing bright, confident women and portraiture is a speciality, although she works with almost any subject including the delicious renderings in her food range.

What led you to become an illustrator?
I always liked to draw so it’s something that I pictured doing for the rest of my life. Did you studio illustration at college (if so where)? I graduated at Otis College of Art and Design, and studied concept art. Where did you grow up? Los Angeles, CA Where do you live now and what drew you there? I live somewhere in LA in between the city and the beaches. Describe your studio for us My “studio” is a small desk in the living room. I work from home. Who or What is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration are my own insecurities, but turning them into something beautiful. How do you get your ideas? I watch a lot of anime, I read comics and manga, I try to keep up with high fashion, I watch a lot of Youtube videos and music videos, and sometimes I get ideas from my daily walk. What are your interests outside of illustration? I like food, so I try to discover new foods to eat in Los Angeles. I also experiment with baking, and sometimes I attempt to recreate recipes I grew up with because I don’t live in an area that has food from my culture. Tell us about a favourite project you’ve recently completed So far, the illustration I’ve done for Entertainment Weekly was a dream come true. What would be your dream job/commission? I would like to create variant covers for a comic book. I would like to do more editorial illustrations too. Why is illustration such a powerful medium? You can create something that goes beyond what can be captured in real life, and can inspire people or represent a movement. How much of your work is hand drawn? I draw everything using Photoshop, but I always start with a sketch, even though it’s done digitally. How do you envisage illustration evolving? With VR or AR coming into play, possibly. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’d like to visit Japan some day. Have you any hidden talents? I played the violin for 13 years, and was part of youth orchestras that performed at places like the Alex Theatre, the Skirball, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I’m cool where I’m at.
