Interview
A true collage enthusiast, André's main drive is to create new images out of used and overlooked ones, exploring the conceptual possibilities of decontextualizing and combining them. His process is, basically, to kidnap images from their original place and relate them with other displaced elements. Image juxtaposition and unique usage of color is what forges André Bergamin's style and how his striking compositions come to life.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Andre: I'm not sure exactly how it happened. I used to work as an art director for advertising agencies when I was offered my first commission for an editorial illustration. I worked both jobs for a while but later I decided I enjoyed being a freelance illustrator a lot more. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Andre: I have a degree in Advertising (PUCRS) and a MA in Graphic Design (UNISINOS). Question: Where do you live & what drew you there? Andre: Porto Alegre, Brazil. I was born here and most of my family and friends are here. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Andre: It's hard to name only one. To be fair with the teenager inside me I'll say Kurt Cobain. Question: How do you get your ideas? Andre: All my ideas come from images and the possibilities of combining images and building scenes in my mind. I can get ideas from magazines, films, song lyrics, conversations, etc. Question: Do you collect anything? Andre: Old magazines and books. Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Andre: Yes. I use it mostly to write some brief ideas for collage scenes. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Andre: Art, music and films. Question: What is the first record you bought? Andre: I think it was a BB King's cd I bought for my Father's birthday. The first album I can recall buying for me is Nirvana's Nevermind.
Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Andre: I've just finished a collage for the Statesman Magazine. I was commissioned to illustrate a poem by Simon Armitage. Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Andre: A Tom Waits album cover. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Andre: Winston Smith, Robert Crumb, Ralph Steadman. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Andre: I'd like to work as an art director in the movie industry. Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Andre: "Never trust a man in a blue trench coat. Never drive a car when you are dead". Tom Waits. Question: If you could live anywhere, where would you go? Andre: Probably New York. Question: If you could take a holiday leaving tomorrow, where would you go & what would you do? Andre: New York again. I'd love to go to the MoMA. Question: If you could travel back in time which period would you visit & why? Andre: California, 1952 Chet Baker and the Gerry Mulligan Quartet used to play every night in a small club called The Haig. Question: What's your favourite quote from a song or book or someone? Andre: "All man needs is independent volition, whatever that independence might cost and wherever it might lead. Anyway, the devil only knows what volition is". Dostoyevsky’s Notes from the Underground.
