Andrew: H.N.D. in Illustration from Cleveland College of Art and Design. Question: Where are you originally from? Andrew: Guisborough, North Yorkshire. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Andrew: In a small village by a river in the Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire; an area I'd known since a child through family farming connections. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Andrew: Nature: endlessly inspiring! Question: How do you get your ideas? Andrew: Regular field trips and observation of nature provide me with all the inspiration I need. Question: Do you collect anything? Andrew: I'm particularly interested in Jurassic fossils but also collect corkscrews and oriental antiques. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Andrew: Hiking the local countryside where I love observing all aspects of nature and archaeology. Question: What is the first record you bought? Andrew: 'Fiesta' by The Pogues. Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Andrew: I was recently asked to complete two trompe l'oeil panels suitable for a new restaurant in the Cotswolds. I illustrated part of my own collection of corkscrews.
Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Andrew: I have always wanted to do a set of stamps for the Royal Mail. If I did, I would love to do a set based on British rare breed farm animals. Question: Who are your art heroes? Andrew: I love the work of Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders and Ray Harris-Ching. Another great influence was Alan Hunt who used to live close to my home and who provided inspiration and much needed encouragement. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Andrew: A palaeontologist or an antique furniture restorer. Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Andrew: Give up the ballet and stick to the art! Question: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Andrew: Australia, I'd love to see some of their reptiles. Question: Do you have any pets? Andrew: Yes three pet rats: Sirius, Dobby and Shifty Barry. Question: If you could travel back in time which period would you visit & why? Andrew: I would visit the Jurassic era; to see pterosaurs flying overhead and see ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs swimming in the oceans would just be amazing.
