Interview
I'm a freelance designer specialising in illustration and custom lettering. I work from my studio based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, which I share with three other designers. My illustrations are often described as strong and detailed, vintage with a contemporary touch, authentic and elegant with an edge. I produce a wide range of illustrative design work for advertising, cultural markets, fashion, lifestyle, editorial and music industry and I've worked with clients all over the globe.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Eric: I've always liked drawing and as a kid I've always been attracted to the underground illustrations and logo artworks on skateboards, T-shirts, album sleeves and gig posters. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Eric: After secondary school I started working as a house decorator/carpenter/construction builder etc. After three years I wanted to do something more creative so I decided to do a part time course on Multi Media Design, after that I went to Art School to study Illustration. Question: Where are you originally from? Eric: I’m originally from a small village named Dommelen in the south of Holland near the Belgium border. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Eric: I’m currently in Utrecht, I moved there because I went to Art School. It is such a good place to live. Question: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Eric: My Studio is based in the town centre of Utrecht. I share a space with three other great designers and Sjaakie dog. There is a really good vibe in our studio, there’s always music on, good jokes and we give each other good feedback. The building provides about 50 studios that are used by all kinds of other design studios or freelancers. It’s a really inspiring environment to work. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Eric: I find my inspiration in daily life, arts, dreams, music, film, stories, friends, other designers etc. In fact everything can be an inspiration to me, I don't try to focus on one particular thing and try to be open to all that can be inspiring.
Question: How do you get your ideas? Eric: I always start sketching, doodling, writing, brainstorming, collecting, doing research on the internet, talking to others about it. I also have a little book where I write down ideas when they pop-up, sometimes they are used if it fits a concept for a commission. Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Eric: I always have sketch books, where I write down ideas, or make quick drawings. A sketch book is such a good place to experiment, because I don’t worry about making something really good. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Eric: I enjoy doing kickboxing/krav maga/martial arts and like to go running to stay fit and healthy. I used to play guitar in a punk-rock band for 12 years but I’ve recently quit the band, but still like to play the guitar. Question: Tell us about a favourite project you’ve recently completed. Eric: That would be an illustration for an advertising campaign for Ray Ban's new Rare Prints collection. I was asked to produce an illustration inspired by the colourful patterns printed on Ray Ban's new range of sunglasses. It was amazing that a brand like this went for something arty and illustrative. Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Eric: It would be amazing to design new Euro or Dollar bills, it would be a great combination of illustration and typography. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Eric: Unhappy I guess, but if I had to choose I would like to be an inventor. Question: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Eric: It would be cool to dance on the moon or go diving in the deep sea. Question: If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet? Eric: I would like to have a guitar lesson from Jimi Hendrix or drawing lessons from Rembrandt.
