Daniel O'Leary is a New York City based illustrator, fine artist, and photographer, with many years of experience satisfying a variety of clients. Having produced thousands of illustrations, drawings and paintings, Danny has developed a reputation as an extremely versatile artist who guarantees to deliver a high quality work of art to deadlines, ensuring peace of mind for the buyer. He can work digitally in Photoshop and Corel Painter or via traditional methods.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Daniel: It probably goes back to all the great illustration in the huge stacks of yellow National Geographic Magazines I had as a kid. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Daniel: I got a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Paier College of Art in Connecticut USA. Then I studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Arts Students League in NYC. Question: Where are you originally from? Daniel: I've always lived within an hour or two of NYC. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Daniel: After 25 years in Manhattan, a few months ago I moved to our little lake house in Northern NJ. Question: Where is your studio & can you describe if for me? Daniel: It's a small room in the house with floor to ceiling glass on 3 sides. It's divided into computer and painting spaces, I also work outside. Question: Describe the view from your studio window. Daniel: It's a pretty nice view of the lake, about 10 ft away. There's a small forested area to the side, and gorgeous sunsets across the lake. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Daniel: I love music, pop culture, film, the news, kayaking, the ocean, landscape painting, history, American Civil War reenacting & backpacking.
Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Daniel: I recently did a private commission of a series of illustrations of one of the world's best selling novelists. But I'm not allowed to talk about it yet. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Daniel: Tom Lovell, Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth, David Shannon, Matt Muhurin, Gary Larson, Norman Rockwell. Question: What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into illustration? Daniel: Learn how to make your illustrations MOVE! At least have some knowledge of animation. Question: Do you think anyone with Photoshop can be an illustrator these days? Daniel: I own an awesome surfboard but I can barely stand up on the thing. Question: What was the first record you bought? Daniel: I'm embarrassed to say that it was actually won from a radio contest....KISS ALIVE II, I was about 12 years old. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Daniel: I've been studying voice acting for a while, that's been a passion for way too long. I'd also love to work for a charity, if I didn't have to make a living.
