Hannah Davies is an award winning Welsh based freelance designer and illustrator, who recently won an award in New Designers 2010. She is a fine-detail Surface Pattern Design specialist who draws on her love of nature for inspiration, producing intricate work rich in texture and colour. Combining illustration and pattern design, “I use my imaginative and detailed hand-drawing as a starting point. I then develop this using my own vibrant watercolours and collage techniques”.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Hannah: It's natural. I've always loved drawing since I was a little girl. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Hannah: I have a degree in surface pattern design at Swansea metropolitan university. Question: Where are you originally from? Hannah: Swansea - Wales. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Hannah: Swansea. It’s by the Gower peninsular which is a beautiful stretch of coastline. My love for nature and the sea has always attracted me to the area. Question: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Hannah: My studio is in my house and it opens up on to the wonderful garden which floods with light and home grown plants and veg. My studio’s full of photos, which I use for inspiration. I have many photos of plants and flowers gathered from the botanical gardens. I love capturing the minute details of landscapes and the bold colours, my space is full of inspirational photography. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Hannah: Nature, ocean and fine detail is my main inspiration source. Question: How do you get your ideas? Hannah: Pictures, visiting galleries, exhibitions, going to as many charity shops as possible, gathering new patterns.
Question: Do you collect anything? Hannah: I love collecting bits and pieces from charity shops and recreating old pieces into new ones. Vintage items that I can strip down and put my own stamp on (at the minute I’m collecting white tea pots so I can digitally transfer my own patterns to create my own ceramic collection). Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Hannah: I always keep a small sketch book wherever I go in my bag so I can jot down ideas if something inspires me! I’m always doodling everywhere I go! Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Hannah: Listen to music / walking the Gower coastline and visiting inspiring cultural places (aka Morocco / Gambia / Turkey). I love spending time with friends chilling on the beach. Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Hannah: Illustrating covers for cd’s for a well known artist that I love such as Zero 7. Question: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Hannah: India / Asia and I’ve just returned from travelling Morocco for a month which has given me great inspiration for future projects as I am so inspired by detail.
