Judith van den Hoek’s fashion illustrations are minimalistic and simple. Her illustrations have a simplicity of approach demanding the absolute satisfaction out of just one single line or two for the silhouette. Judith's illustrations capture a different perspective of fashion collections that is very creative, sensual and beautiful to observe. She likes to work with black and to sketch, which is what she does best, and with this she gets to add her own personal touch to her illustrations. Judith loves to invent and experience new ideas with her drawings. Her biggest inspiration sources are magazines, fashion bloggers and books.

Judith's works can be seen all over the world in publications, magazines and advertisements.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Judith: I have been drawing since I was a little kid. Drawing is also something that runs in my family. My parents used to draw when they were younger. Also both of my grandma's used to draw. One of them even liked to draw fashion, like I do & the other one painted beautiful landscapes. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Judith: I studied graphic design at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam & after that I decided I wanted to follow fashion illustration so took a one year course in Amsterdam. Very useful, because I learned experimenting with different styles. Question: Where are you originally from? Judith: I am from Gouda, The Netherlands. I still live there. I used to have wild dreams as a little kid about moving to Amsterdam or even Paris when I grew older. But now, for me there's no other place like Gouda. My roots are here and this is the place I call home. Question: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Judith: In my own apartment. And it really is a mess. When I expect visitors I take the effort to clean it up, but a few days later it's a big mess again with papers, pencils, paint laying around everywhere. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Judith: René Gruau. I love his work. Question: How do you get your ideas? Judith: From (fashion) blogs, (fashion) magazines, the street. Everywhere.
Question: Do you collect anything? Judith: Really inspiring images. Mostly illustrations. About one year ago my mother bought me postcards from René Gruau in London as a surprise for me. I also have a big collection of beautiful stones. I have them displayed everywhere in my house. My grandparents used to travel through South Europe to find these beautiful stones. They were stone diggers. Since they passed away we (my family and I) kept a lot of their stones. Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Judith: I just finished a project with Charles Heidsieck. I illustrated a Champagne box for them (for Rosé Réserve Champagne). I really loved to illustrate that. And I like the idea that if the champagne box is empty, you can use it a jewellery box! Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Judith: Working for a really big fashion brand. Like Dior, Chanel, Armani. Something like that. Question: Who is your design hero? Judith: I find everything that Karl Lagerfeld designs so inspirational. Sometimes I wish I could do what he does. Is there anything that man can't do? Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Judith: No isn't no. It means, try again. Question: What's your favourite quote from a song or book or someone? Judith: Coco Chanel: "A girl should be two things: Classy and fabulous."
