Interview
As an Illustrator my watch words are Beauty and Balance. These two words have allowed my work to effortlessly translate into children's books, fashion and advertising. My classic technique coupled with a great knowledge of the contemporary world have won me the front cover of Design Week for my first children's book and saw my fashion designs sold to the likes of Yoko Ono. I see my illustrations as art, and pride myself on creating beautiful original pieces, limiting my use of digital mediums to the minimum. My work is drawn from nature and this truth is something that i vitalise all the concepts, ideas and stories i work on with.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Rohan: I've always drawn, I used to sell illustrations of dogs in bathrooms when I was 11, I guess it's in my blood. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Rohan: I studied printmaking and book arts at Croydon college, but spent most of the time making paintings in the studios of Kingston University. Question: Where are you originally from? Rohan: I was born in Middlesborough and grew up in Lincolnshire. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Rohan: I now live in London. There is no where better to prove how hard you can work, and how much you believe in yourself. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Rohan: My family inspire me to succeed. Question: How do you get your ideas? Rohan: My ideas grow from a need to create beauty and balance. Question: Do you collect anything? Rohan: I don't collect anything, but I love books, and never say no to something interesting. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Rohan: I've been in a band for 12 years, I love making music, there's a great camaraderie in a band.
Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Rohan: My involvement in the Anna trilogy is something I'm most proud of, just book 3 remains. Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Rohan: Illustration is not used enough in adult novels, I would like to change this. Question: Who are your artistic heroes? Rohan: Aubrey Beardsley, Francis Bacon, Whistler, Lautrec, Arthur Rackham, Gary Hume, and Gavin Turk, who inspired me to make art. Question: Who is your musical hero? Rohan: Alex Hutchins, from Cyclones, my band mate, and an amazing songwriter. Question: How do you think a friend, or professor who knows you well would describe you? Rohan: Quiet. Quiet, but occasionally significant. Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Rohan: My dad telling me to "do it better". Question: Do you have a method for dealing with the feeling of having no ideas? Rohan: I have a children's book, that I have written, it occupies any time with which I have no ideas to fill. Question: Who would you like to have as your muse if your were painting their portrait? Rohan: Iris Krueger my beautiful girlfriend, whom I never tire of looking at.
