Interview
Ron Borresen has been drawing since he was able to pick up a crayon. But ever since winning the “Most Artistic” award in Mrs.. McCalisters third grade class he knew he wanted to be a artist. Since then, Ron has studied illustration at Ringling College of Art & Design. After graduating he became a professional illustrator with his art being seen on the covers of numerous magazines and newspapers as well as illustrating his first children’s book, “Monsters at the Bat.” Ron works almost exclusively in the digital world. Although the process still starts with pencil and paper. He imports his sketch into the computer and that's where the magic happens. Between Painter and Photoshop this is where Ron's sketches come to life.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Ron: It's what I do and what I love. So I might as well earn a living at what I love to do. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Ron: Graduate of Ringling College and design, Illustration Major. Question: Where are you originally from? Ron: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Ron: Palmetto, Florida, USA. While going to college, which happens to be right up the road, I came to love the bay area of Florida. Question: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Ron: My studio is in the back of our home. But actually it is in shambles right now. I am in the middle of redecorating it. New paint, furniture and equipment. Question: Describe the view from your studio window? Ron: The best view from my studio is my kids playground. It reminds me of the two little ones I work so hard for.
Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Ron: My wife and kids, I never want to let them down. Question: How do you get your ideas? Ron: They can come from anywhere for me. Walking down the street, reading a book, doodling, and there one is. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Ron: Pro Wrestling, the male soap opera. Question: What is the first record you bought? Ron: KISS, Kiss Alive II. I still remember going to the record store to buy it. Back when there was records and record stores for that matter. Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Ron: I actually just completed a 7 page spread for National Geographic. Based on the adventures of two explorers in Yellowstone National Park. It was a little different than what I usually do. It was my style but in a graphic novel setting. A lot of work, but ended up really nice in the end. Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Ron: Major magazine cover, maybe Time, Rolling Stone, or The New Yorker. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Ron: C.F. Payne, Mark Fredrickson and Peter de Seve. Question: Who are your musical heroes? Ron: Elvis, Johnny Cash and anything by "The Rat Pack".
