Interview
Armed with a degree in graphic design and an eagerness to liberate his creativity beyond the confines of 'page layout'. Stuart ventured into commission based illustrating in 2001. His graphic design background is still heavily present in his composition, vivid use of flat colour and delicate key-line illustration style. Despite his love of his home city London, Stuart has lived in Melbourne Australia for the previous 6 years where he continues to work as an illustrator. The illustration process: Most projects are penciled first for client amendments/approval. They are then fleshed out into final artwork using vector based 'Adobe illustrator CS5'. He is also excited to soon develop animation to bring his illustrations to life.
Question: Do you have any formal design training? Stuart: BA Graphic Design (Croydon College of Art, class of 2000). Question: Where are you originally from? Stuart: London. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Stuart: I've been living in Melbourne for the last 6 years because it's such an awesome city to live in. Question: Do you collect anything? Stuart: Vinyl records, although the majority of the collection is sadly gathering dust and dampness in storage in the UK. Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Stuart: Not in the traditional sense, though I am constantly book-marking and collecting physically or on-line any art/design/illustrations that I find inspiring. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Stuart: For fitness and clarity of mind, I enjoy running and playing squash; I'm passionate about music, be it collecting, listening or checking out live bands; Given the industry I am in, I also enjoy witnessing or participating in most things creative. Question: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed. Stuart: A suite of 25 illustrated covers for Deakin Universities Undergraduate and Postgraduate course guide booklets.
Question: What would be your dream job/commission? Stuart: I would love to be involved in a fashion campaign, or large format retail interiors. Question: Who are your art heroes? Stuart: Will Cotton, Walter Martin & Paloma Munoz, Patrick Caulfield, Gary Hume, Robert Rauschenberg, Peter Blake. Question: Who are your musical heroes? Stuart: Tom Waits, Neil Young, Will Oldham, Jim James, Bill Withers, Jason 'Spaceman' Pierce, Jack Nitzsche. Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Stuart: Stay proud. Stuart: What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into illustration? Stuart: Do it for the love of it, be passionate, work hard. Question: If you could live anywhere, where would you go? Stuart: Brooklyn. Question: If you could travel back in time which period would you visit & why? Stuart: Manhattan in the 1920's just because it was a birth of such a good era of history, architecture, design, decadence and debauchery. Question: What's your favourite scene or line from a film? Stuart: I love cinema, and I love film credits; either early animated ones by Saul Bass, or more recently the animated opening credits from 'kiss kiss bang bang' or the 'Sherlock Holmes' end credits-go check them out on You Tube.
