Training

Sunny studied illustration at the Otis College of Art and Design in LA, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Approach

Each illustration begins with a series of rough sketches, which Sunny uses to develop the composition. Once she’s decided on the composition, she works on the details and then starts painting. Her favourite medium is watercolour – she loves their vibrant and unpredictable nature. Occasionally, she uses graphite or acrylic paints for some of the textures. Sunny will use a computer to create surface designs and textile patterns.

Style

When she’s painting, Sunny says she’s bathed in happiness and she puts that across in bright colour and rich detail. The focus on beauty and feeling is clear in her work and she wants to bring joy to whoever looks at it.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Sunny: Drawing and painting have always been my favorite things to do since I was a kid. It's a dream come true to turn my love into my profession.Question: Do you have any formal design training? Sunny: Yes, I received my BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, majored in Communication Arts--Illustration.Question: Where are you originally from? Sunny: I was born and raised in China, and emigrated with my family to the U.S. when I was 13.Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Sunny: I live and work between LA and Temecula. Initially we came to Los Angeles for my Dad's job, then we fell in love with this city of diverse culture, people and inspirations. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Sunny: Flowers and colors! Question: How do you get your ideas? Sunny: Ideas always find me! I think it's because I'm always in the moment, so I get very excited by all the interesting little things that I come across on a daily basis. I write down ideas and notes in my sketchbook everyday, it's an archive of potential themes for the next paintings.Question: Do you collect anything? Sunny: Yes, floral print clothing and colorful accessories! I can't help it! Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Sunny: I keep a journal. I write and draw frequently, it's also where I paste some memorable tickets, inspiring magazine cut-outs and pressed flowers. Question: Sunny: Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed.Question: A skincare and cosmetics packaging illustration series for Fancl to celebrate their 35th Anniversary. Fancl is a brand I loved and respected for many years, so it's a great pleasure and honor to have this opportunity working with them. For this project, we have the ideal art directions! They asked me to incorporate a specific flower and a girl for each collection, those are my favorite subjects to draw! The working process is very smooth and they granted me plenty of artistic freedom. The Fancl team were the most detail oriented people I've ever worked with. I'm deeply inspired and motivated by their work ethic. The final products came out so lovely. They are available worldwide online and in all Fancl retail stores in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. It's true bliss when my Chinese relatives told me that now they are using Fancl products with my illustrations on them. Sunny: What would be your dream job/commission?Question: I'm open to new possibilities and love seeing my illustrations applied on different products. I prefer working on colorful figurative illustrations, with some creative freedom. Sunny: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be?
