Paul Daviz prefers to think of himself as more of a humorous illustrator than a cartoonist. he has a wealth of experience from freelance, working for Design Groups, Ad Agencies, Animation Studios, and Publishers. Paul loves the computer! It has has given him the wonderful freedom to experiment!
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Paul: A stolen 'Mad Magazine' at age 11. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Paul: A failed two year graphic design course at Blackburn College of Technology and Design. Question: Where are you originally from? Paul: Blackburn, Lancashire. Question: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Paul: Boscombe, Dorset. I needed to run away. Question: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Paul: It’s an attic room in my flat. It’s dark and crowded, but hey. Question: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Paul: The sheer pleasure of drawing. Question: Do you collect anything? Paul: I say no, my family say 'yes!, what about all of your various electric and acoustic guitars and a lute, a sitar, mandolin, ukulele, lap guitar, saz,'. Question: Do you keep a scrapbook? Paul: Volumes of them. Question: What are your interests outside of illustration? Paul: Making and recording music, pop quiz Thursday night at the Commodore.
Question: Who are your art heroes? Paul: L.S. Lowry; love his limited palette, Lucien Freud, Vincent. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Paul: Mort Drucker, Halas and Batchelor, Paul Sample. Question: Who are your musical heroes? Paul: Nick Lowe, The Beatles, Hank Williams. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Paul: Probably very bitter and unhappy. Question: What's the best advice you've ever been given? Paul: Never make excuses for your work. Question: Do you have a method for dealing with the feeling of having no ideas? Paul: I draw, usually on the score sheet at the pop quiz. Question: What about when you hit 'the wall' with an illustration? How do you cope with that? Paul: Look at it in the mirror. Question: Do you have any pets? Paul: Daisy a 9 month old Parson Jack Russell.
