Und jetzt liegt mein Studio nur zwei Minuten von den Aardman Studios entfernt!\r\n\r\nWo lebst du heute – und warum dort?  \r\nIch lebe seit dem Studium in Bristol, mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung, als ich einige Jahre in Amsterdam gewohnt habe. Ursprünglich bin ich wegen des Studiengangs nach Bristol gekommen, aber ich mochte die Stadt sofort – sie ist für eine Großstadt nicht zu groß oder chaotisch und hat einen unabhängigen DIY-Geist, besonders in der Kunst- und Musikszene.\r\n\r\nBeschreibe dein Studio für uns  \r\nIch arbeite in einem Gemeinschaftsatelier in einer Galerie namens Spike Island – zusammen mit ein paar Freund:innen, die alle als 3D-Digital Artists tätig sind. Wir haben eine Ecke in einem großen, offenen Raum, der früher mal ein Ladebereich in einer Teefabrik war.\r\n\r\nWenn du ein finanziertes Traumstipendium bekommen würdest – wohin würdest du gehen und was würdest du machen?  \r\nIch würde gerne Zeit damit verbringen, Linolschnitt zu lernen und mich nicht auf einen Ort festlegen, sondern eine Tour durch Großbritannien machen – um Folklore und regionale Bräuche zu erforschen.\r\n\r\nWelchen Karrieretipp würdest du deinem jüngeren Ich geben?  \r\nEntspann dich, probier viel aus – und sorge stetig für neue Inspiration.\r\n\r\nWie verbringst du am liebsten einen freien Tag?  \r\nIch verlasse gern die Stadt und gehe wandern oder verbringe Zeit in der Natur – oder ich bleibe zu Hause und mache Musik.\r\n\r\nWie trennst du Berufs- und Privatleben?  \r\nIch lasse alles im Studio und arbeite selten nach 18 Uhr – ich denke, meine Work-Life-Balance ist im Moment ziemlich gesund. Ich versuche auch, E-Mails nur während der „Bürozeiten“ zu beantworten – es sei denn, es ist wirklich dringend.\r\n\r\nLebst du umweltbewusst oder nachhaltig?  \r\nIch habe kein Auto und fahre überall mit dem Rad. Ich versuche, möglichst plastikfrei einzukaufen, und lebe seit etwa acht Jahren vegan. Zum Glück ist Bristol eine Stadt, in der nachhaltiges Leben und Einkaufen ziemlich einfach ist.\r\n\r\nSammelst du etwas?  \r\nIch bin ein paar Jahre lang in mein zwölfjähriges Ich zurückgefallen und habe Warhammer-Figuren gesammelt und bemalt – aber irgendwann war ich ausgebrannt vom stundenlangen Goblin-Anmalen. In letzter Zeit gebe ich mein ganzes Geld für Synthesizer aus.\r\n\r\nWas war die erste Platte, die du gekauft hast?  \r\nIch glaube, das erste Album war *Conspiracy of One* von The Offspring – aber die erste Single war (leider) wohl *Blue* von Eiffel 65.\r\n\r\nWer ist dein künstlerisches Vorbild?  \r\nZurzeit begeistert mich besonders das Werk von Eric Fraser – bekannt für seine kraftvollen und dramatischen Schwarz-Weiß-Illustrationen mit Schabkarton und Gouache, etwa für die *Radio Times*.\r\n\r\nWer ist dein musikalisches Vorbild?  \r\nEine Mischung aus Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen und David Tibet – das wäre mein Musikheld.\r\n\r\nWas würdest du machen, wenn du kein Illustrator wärst?  \r\nIch würde gern sagen: Musiker – aber realistisch gesehen wohl eher etwas weniger Spannendes.\r\n\r\nWenn du überall auf der Welt hinreisen könntest – wohin würdest du gehen?  \r\nIch würde wahrscheinlich nach Indien zurückkehren – wegen der reichen Geschichte, Kultur und Landschaft. Ich praktiziere eine Form tantrischer Philosophie namens Kashmir-Shaivismus und würde gerne mehr Tempel und Ursprungsorte davon erkunden.\r\n\r\nWelche Serie hast du zuletzt durchgebingt?  \r\nIch habe gerade *Ladhood* entdeckt – es geht um eine Freundesgruppe, die sehr nah an dem Ort und zur selben Zeit wie ich aufgewachsen ist. Ein nostalgischer Volltreffer. *The Rehearsal* von Nathan Fielder ist eine irre, meta-mäßige Reise – absolut empfehlenswert.\r\n\r\nAuf welchem Konzert warst du zuletzt?  \r\nIch habe kürzlich *Jaubi* gesehen – eine Band aus Pakistan, die indische klassische Musik spielt.\r\n\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingsbuch?  \r\n*Cosmic Trigger* von Robert Anton Wilson – es hat meine Sicht auf Spiritualität und das Leben verändert. Es geht darum, verschiedene Glaubenssysteme anzunehmen und frei zwischen ihnen zu wechseln. Es hat mich gelehrt, keine Überzeugung zu fest zu halten.\r\n\r\nHast du Tipps für andere Illustrator:innen?  \r\nIch sehe oft erfolgreiche Illustrator:innen, die den Eindruck vermitteln, man müsse jede Nacht durcharbeiten und auch am Wochenende schuften, um Erfolg zu haben. Ich finde es wichtig, zu wissen, dass das auf Dauer nicht tragbar ist – und dass man auch mit einem gesunden Work-Life-Balance erfolgreich sein kann. We have a corner of a big open plan space which I believe used to be a loading bay during the buildings former life as a tea factory. \r\nIf you were funded for a dream artist residency, where would you go, and what would you create?\r\nI’d really like to spend some time developing linocut, and maybe instead of staying in one place, I could do a tour of the UK, exploring folklore and local customs.\r\nWhat career advice would you give your younger self? \r\nJust relax a little, experiment a lot and keep feeding inspiration.\r\nWhat’s your favourite way to spend a day off?\r\nI like to get away from the city and go for a walk and spend time in nature, or stay home and write music.\r\nHow do you separate your work life from your home life?\r\nI leave everything at the studio and rarely work later than 6pm, so I think I’ve got a pretty healthy work life balance at the moment. I also try not to reply to emails etc. out of ‘office hours’ unless it’s really necessary.\r\nDo you adopt any environmental habits\u002Fpractices to be more sustainable?\r\nI don’t drive, so I cycle everywhere and do my best to shop plastic-free as much as possible, and I went vegan around eight years ago. Luckily I live in a city that makes it easy to live and shop in a more sustainable way.\r\nDo you collect anything?  \r\nI regressed into my 12 year old self and collected and painted Warhammer for a few years, but I think I burnt myself out spending so many hours painting goblins. Recently I’ve been spending all my spare money on synthesisers. \r\nWhat is the first record you bought?\r\nI think the first album was ‘Conspiracy of One’ by The Offspring, but the first single was, embarrassingly, probably ‘Blue’ by Eiffel 65.\r\nWho is your art hero? \r\nI’ve been really enjoying Eric Fraser’s work recently, he’s known for his bold and quite dramatic black and white scratchboard and gouache illustrations and his editorial work for the Radio Times.\r\nWho is your music hero? \r\nMy hero would be a hybrid of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and David Tibet.\r\nIf you were not an illustrator, what would you be? \r\nI’d like to say a musician but in reality, probably something far less interesting. \r\nIf you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? \r\nI’d probably go back to India because there’s so much rich history, culture and scenery to explore. I practice a form of tantrik yoga called Kasmir Shaivism and would love to explore more of the temples and areas in which it originated.\r\nWhat is the last show you binged?\r\nI just discovered ‘Ladhood’ about a group of friends growing up very close to where I did, at the same time, so that was great for the nostalgia. Nathan Fielder’s ‘The Rehearsal’ is an insane meta journey that I would definitely recommend.\r\nWhat was the last concert you went to?\r\nI saw Jaubi recently, a band from Pakistan who play Indian classical music.\r\nWhat is your favourite book?\r\n‘Cosmic Trigger’ by Robert Anton Wilson really changed my thinking towards spirituality and my approach to life in general. It’s all about adopting different belief systems and freely switching between them. It taught me to not grip too tightly to any set of beliefs.\r\nDo you have any tips\u002Fadvice for other illustrators?\r\nI see a lot of quite successful illustrators who tend to promote an idea that to make it, you have to work into the early morning every night and all weekend, so I’d really like people to know that it isn’t sustainable over time, and you can have a successful career as an artist and a healthy work-life balance. Personally, I make my best work when I give myself enough time and room for ideas to spring up spontaneously.\r\nWhat do you listen to when you work?
