Genau wie sie habe ich eine Leidenschaft für die Malerei. Ohne zu zögern schnitt ich alle Rückzugsmöglichkeiten ab und bewarb mich direkt für den Studiengang Illustration an einer amerikanischen Kunsthochschule. Dank meiner Bemühungen änderten meine Eltern nach und nach ihre Meinung und unterstützten mich nun sehr und waren stolz auf mich.\r\nHast du Illustration an der Hochschule studiert?\r\nJa, ich habe Illustration am FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City, NY, studiert.\r\nWo bist du aufgewachsen?\r\nIch bin in Xuzhou in der Provinz Jiangsu in China aufgewachsen.\r\nWo lebst du derzeit und was hat dich dorthin gezogen?\r\nDerzeit lebe ich in Queens, New York City. In dieser Gegend gibt es viele asiatische Restaurants und Supermärkte. Es ist sehr praktisch für mich, dort frische Zutaten zum Kochen zu kaufen … Ich koche sehr gerne.\r\nHast du ein Atelier-Haustier?\r\nNein, ich habe keines, aber ich wünsche mir, in naher Zukunft eine süße Katze zu besitzen.\r\nWer oder was ist deine größte Inspiration?\r\nEinen Großteil meiner Inspiration beziehe ich aus der traditionellen chinesischen Malerei, beispielsweise aus der Kavaliersperspektive und der Schönheit der künstlerischen Konzeption. Genauer gesagt finde ich es sehr interessant, dass sowohl das traditionelle chinesische Gemälde „Am Flussufer während des Qingming-Festes“ als auch David Hockney in der Malerei bzw. Fotografie dieselbe Kavaliersperspektive verwenden. Genauso kann ich dies auch in der Illustration nutzen, da Illustrationen nicht besonders realistisch sein müssen. Außerdem mag ich die Gemälde von Wu Guanzhong, die Ost und West miteinander verbinden. Ich kann mich sehr gut mit seinen Werken identifizieren – vielleicht liegt das daran, dass unsere Heimatstädte beide in Jiangnan liegen.\r\nWie kommst du auf deine Ideen?\r\nIch bringe meine Ideen in Gang, indem ich mir Zeit nehme, um sicherzustellen, dass ich die Bedürfnisse des Kunden vollständig verstehe. Anschließend recherchiere ich zum Thema und fasse es in drei bis fünf Schlüsselwörtern zusammen, damit ich mich beim Brainstorming besser konzentrieren kann.\r\nWas sind deine Interessen außerhalb der Illustration?\r\nIch bin jemand, der viele Interessen hat. Ich liebe alle Arten von Sport, besonders Yoga, Basketball und Schwimmen. Außerdem besuche ich gerne Galerien und Museen in New York, um mich inspirieren zu lassen. Durch die Quarantäne habe ich kürzlich erkannt, dass Kochen ebenfalls eine Form von Kunst ist.\r\nWas wäre dein Traumauftrag?\r\nMein Traumauftrag würde eine Kombination aus Leidenschaft, Kreativität und Marketingpotenzial beinhalten. Zunächst einmal sollte es ein Thema sein, das mich interessiert, wie Mode, Kultur oder kreative Projekte, und das dann mit KI-Technologie kombiniert wird. Ich würde gerne weitere Möglichkeiten erkunden, Kunst und Technologie miteinander zu verbinden.\r\nWie viel von Ihrer Arbeit ist handgezeichnet?\r\nDie meisten meiner Kunstwerke werden mit dem digitalen Programm „Photoshop“ fertiggestellt. Für die Texturen in den Bildern verwende ich spezielle Pinsel, die ich selbst erstellt habe, und manchmal erstelle ich die Illustration zunächst mit traditionellen Maltechniken und füge dann in Photoshop eine digitale Collage hinzu. Ich würde gerne weitere Möglichkeiten erkunden, traditionelle Malerei mit digitalen Werkzeugen zu kombinieren – ich liebe die Lebendigkeit der traditionellen Malerei und schätze gleichzeitig die Bequemlichkeit der digitalen Malerei.\r\nWenn du keine Illustratorin wärst, was wärst du dann?\r\nIch glaube, ich wäre Moderatorin oder Schauspielerin – beides steht auch auf meiner Bucket List. Ich genieße es, allein in meinem Atelier zu sein, aber ich liebe auch das Gefühl, mitten auf der Bühne vor einem großen Publikum zu stehen … meine Persönlichkeit ist kompliziert.\r\nWas ist der beste Rat, den du je bekommen hast?\r\n„Es geht nicht um das Ziel, sondern um den Weg.“ und „Es ist nie zu spät, anzufangen.“\r\nHast du irgendwelche verborgenen Talente?\r\nIch kann mir Gesichter schon beim ersten Anblick leicht merken, daher glaube ich, dass ich eine gute Kandidatin für den Beruf einer Gerichtszeichnerin wäre.\r\nWas hörst du, wenn du illustrierst?\r\nMeditationsmusik und klassische Klavierstücke, leichte Musik usw. Diese Art von Musik hilft mir, mich auf meine Arbeit zu konzentrieren, wobei meine Gedanken wie bei einer Meditation fließen.\r\nWas war die letzte Ausstellung, die du gesehen hast und die dir gefallen hat?\r\nDie letzte Ausstellung, die ich gesehen habe, war die Walead-Beshty-Ausstellung in der Petzel-Galerie in New York. Der vollständige Titel der Ausstellung ist ziemlich lang: „Eine teilweise Demontage einer Erfindung ohne Zukunft: Helter-Skelter und zufällige Notizen, bei der die Riemenscheiben und Zahnräder wahllos über die gesamte Werkbank verstreut liegen.“ Als ich den Ausstellungsraum zum ersten Mal sah, war ich einfach sprachlos. Like her, I am passionate about painting. Without any hesitation, I cut off all my retreats and applied directly to the American art school illustration major. With my efforts, my parents gradually changed their minds and became very supportive and proud of me.\r\nDid you study illustration in college? \r\nYes, I studied illustration in FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City, NY.\r\nWhere did you grow up? \r\nI grew up in Xuzhou Jiangsu Province, China.\r\nWhere do you live now and what drew you there? \r\nCurrently, I live in Queens, New York City. There are lots of Asian food restaurants and supermarkets in this area. It’s very convenient for me to buy fresh stuff to cook… I love cooking.\r\nDo you have a studio pet?\r\nNo, I don’t have one but I wish I could own a cute cat in the near future.\r\nWho or What is your biggest inspiration? \r\nI get a lot of my inspiration from traditional Chinese painting, such as cavalier perspective and the beauty of artistic conception, to be more specific, I think it's very interesting that Chinese traditional painting \"Along the River During the Qingming Festival\" and David Hockney use the same cavalier perspective in the painting and photography. The same way that I can use this in illustration because illustration doesn't need to be very realistic. I also like Wu Guanzhong's paintings which combined the East and West. I can relate to his works a lot, maybe our hometowns are both in Jiangnan.\r\nHow do you get your ideas? \r\nI kick-start my ideas by taking my time to make sure that I fully understand the needs of the client, and then do the research on the topic and summarize the topic into 3-5 key words, so that I can focus my mind during the brainstorming.\r\nWhat are your interests outside of illustration?  \r\nI am the kind of person who has lots of interests. I love all kinds of sports, especially yoga, basketball, and swimming. I also like to visit many galleries and museums in NY to gather inspirations. Recently because of quarantine, I realize cooking is also another kind of art.\r\nWhat would be your dream commission?\r\nMy dream commission would include a combination of passion, creativity and marketing prospects. First of all, take the theme I am interested in such as fashion, culture or some creative projects and then combine it with AI technology, I’d love to explore more possibilities combining art and technology.\r\n\r\nHow much of your work is hand drawn?\r\nMost of my artworks are finished by the digital tool \"Photoshop\". For the textures in the images, I use special brushes I made and sometimes I will create the illustration using traditional painting and then do the digital collage on Photoshop. I’d love to explore more ways to combine traditional painting with digital tools, I love the vivid sense of traditional painting and also love the convenience of digital painting. \r\nIf you were not an illustrator, what would you be?\r\nI think I would be a hostess or an actress, which is also on my bucket list. I enjoy the feeling of being alone at my studio, but I also love the feeling of standing in the centre of the stage facing a crowd of people…my personality is complicated.\r\nWhat’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? \r\n“It's not about destination; it's about the journey.” and “It’s never too late to start.”\r\nHave you any hidden talents? \r\nI can easily remember people’s faces at first sight, so I think I might be a good candidate for being a courtroom sketch artist.\r\nWhat do you listen to when you’re illustrating?\r\nMeditation music and classical piano songs, light music etc. Those kinds of songs can make me focus on my work, with my mind flowing like meditation.\r\nWhat was the last exhibition you saw and loved?\r\nThe last exhibition I saw was Walead Beshty exhibition in Petzel gallery, NY. The full name of the exhibition is quite long” A Partial Disassembling of an Invention without a Future: Helter-Skelter and Random Notes in which the Pulleys and Cogwheels are Lying around at Random All over the Workbench.” It was just breath-taking when I first saw the installation view.
