Using light and shadow, and separating foreground and background detail, the viewer feels like they’re looking in on stories with real meaning.\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3>Languages\u003C\u002Fh3>\r\nRomanian, English, French.","Was hat dich dazu gebracht, Illustratorin zu werden?\r\nZeichnen und Malen waren Dinge, in denen ich mich gerne verlor, seit ich zum ersten Mal einen Bleistift in der Hand hielt. Als ich herausfand, dass ich daraus einen Beruf machen konnte, wusste ich, dass ich genau das wollte – in der einen oder anderen Form.\r\nHast du Illustration an der Hochschule studiert?\r\nIch habe eigentlich schon ab der ersten Klasse bis zur Oberstufe eine Schule mit künstlerischer Ausrichtung besucht. Anschließend habe ich an der Universität für Kunst und Design in Cluj-Napoca (Rumänien) meinen Bachelor- und Master-Abschluss gemacht. Außerdem habe ich im Rahmen des Erasmus-Programms ein Jahr im Ausland an der Kunstakademie in Łódź, Polen, verbracht, wo ich mich mehr auf Grafik und Mischtechniken konzentriert habe.\r\nWo bist du aufgewachsen?\r\nIch bin in Rumänien aufgewachsen, in einer kleinen Stadt namens Deva, in einem urigen Haus mit Garten. Das ist wahrscheinlich der Grund, warum Pflanzen in meinen Arbeiten so häufig vorkommen. Ich bin in den 90er- und 00er-Jahren aufgewachsen, einer Zeit, in der mein Land viele Veränderungen durchlief und sich auch die Welt um mich herum sowie die Ästhetik wandelten. Auch mein Geschmack hat sich erweitert. Früher mochte ich zum Beispiel alte Wohnhäuser überhaupt nicht, aber dann begann ich, ihren Charakter und die Art und Weise zu schätzen, wie Menschen versuchen, ihnen ihren Stempel aufzudrücken.\r\nAls ich noch ganz klein war, hatten wir kein Internet. Wenn ich mir also historische Fernsehserien ansah (vor allem solche, die im 18. Jahrhundert spielten), skizzierte ich schnell die Kleider, sobald sie auf dem Bildschirm zu sehen waren. Dann versuchte ich, sie für meine Puppen nachzubauen – einschließlich der Korsetts, Perücken und Stickereien. Ich erinnere mich auch daran, dass ich viel Zeit im Garten verbracht habe, um nach Insekten zu suchen, die ich zeichnen konnte, oder um die Katzen aus der Nachbarschaft zu skizzieren, die dort herumlungerten. Diese ruhige Zeit in ihrer Gesellschaft war sehr friedlich.\r\nKannst du dich daran erinnern, wann du zum ersten Mal Kunst in einem kommerziellen Kontext gesehen hast?\r\nAls ich aufwuchs, versuchte meine Mutter, mir die am schönsten illustrierten und fantasievollsten Bücher zu besorgen, die sie in Buchhandlungen finden konnte. Außerdem hatte ich ein paar alte Bücher meiner Mutter und meiner Großmutter. Das hat meinen Geschmack wirklich geprägt; darin kamen viele traditionelle Techniken zum Einsatz, und ich konnte den persönlichen und einzigartigen Stil jedes Illustrators erkennen.\r\nWo lebst du jetzt und was hat dich dorthin gezogen?\r\nNach meinem Bachelor- und Masterstudium bin ich in Cluj-Napoca geblieben, wo ich studiert habe. Es ist eine Stadt, die Altes und Neues verbindet, mit einer lebendigen Kunstszene, aber auch ziemlich ruhig ist.\r\nBeschreibe uns doch mal dein Atelier\r\nIch lebe und arbeite am selben Ort, was schon seit meiner Kindheit ein Traum von mir war. Was ich tue, ist ein fester Bestandteil meines Lebens, deshalb mag ich es, bis spät in die Nacht zeichnen zu können, wenn ich mich inspiriert fühle, oder eine Pause von der Arbeit zu machen, um kleine Hausarbeiten zu erledigen. Ich habe viele Pflanzen und gemütliche Beleuchtung sowie kleine Kleinigkeiten, die ich auf Flohmärkten gefunden habe.\r\nHast du ein Atelier-Haustier?\r\nNur wenn man Pflanzen als Haustiere zählt; ich habe so etwas wie ein kleines Gewächshaus. Und obwohl ich derzeit keine richtigen Haustiere habe, passen meine Katzen auf meine Katzen auf, wenn meine Freunde auf Reisen sind.\r\nWer oder was ist deine größte Inspiration?\r\nIch lasse mich von meinem Leben inspirieren, von kleinen Szenen, auf die ich bei meinen Spaziergängen stoße, von alten Häusern und davon, wie Pflanzen mit der städtischen Umgebung interagieren. Außerdem führe ich seit vielen Jahren ein Traumtagebuch, und einige dieser Elemente sowie die darin herrschende Atmosphäre haben sich in meine Arbeit eingeschlichen.\r\nWenn du mit einem anderen Künstler oder Kreativen eines beliebigen Genres zusammenarbeiten könntest – egal ob lebendig oder verstorben –, wer wäre das?\r\nIch habe nicht unbedingt eine bestimmte Person im Sinn, aber ich kann sagen, dass ich aus den bisherigen Kooperationen viel Inspiration gewonnen habe. Vor allem bei redaktionellen Illustrationen tausche ich mich oft mit dem Autor des Artikels aus, um den besten Weg zu finden, die richtigen Ideen und Emotionen des Artikels darzustellen. Ich finde es sehr inspirierend, Ideen mit jemandem hin und her zu wälzen, der mit Leidenschaft bei der Sache ist.\r\nWie verbringst du am liebsten einen freien Tag?\r\nDas kommt darauf an; ein langer Spaziergang in der Natur mit Freunden macht meinen Kopf frei und gibt mir neue Energie. Auch der Besuch von Flohmärkten und eine kleine Schnitzeljagd, der Besuch von Ausstellungseröffnungen und das zufällige Treffen mit Freunden und Bekannten gehören dazu. An anderen Tagen habe ich einfach das Bedürfnis, zu Hause neue Energie zu tanken, etwas Leckeres zu kochen und mit einer Gesichtsmaske Filme zu schauen.\r\nFür welche Themen engagierst du dich besonders?\r\nAm meisten liegen mir Themen am Herzen, die mit Frauenrechten, der Bekämpfung von Gewalt gegen Frauen und dem Zugang zu Chancengleichheit zu tun haben. Außerdem Themen im Zusammenhang mit sozialer Ungerechtigkeit.\r\nWendest du umweltbewusste Praktiken an, um nachhaltiger zu leben?\r\nMeine Gewohnheiten, die man als nachhaltig bezeichnen könnte, stammen aus meiner Erziehung, auch wenn wir das damals nicht so genannt haben. Ich vermeide Lebensmittelverschwendung und koche auch meistens selbst. Wenn ich ausgehe, fahre ich meistens mit dem Bus oder gehe zu Fuß, und ich liebe es, nach Vintage-Kleidung zu stöbern.\r\nSammelst du irgendetwas?\r\nIch kann einfach nicht aufhören, zartes Glasgeschirr und Porzellan zu kaufen, das so dünn wie möglich ist. Es ist keine Sammlung im eigentlichen Sinne, obwohl es letztendlich ziemlich viel Platz einnimmt für etwas, das keine Sammlung ist. Außerdem liebe ich Silberschmuck, manchmal auch Gold, besonders Vintage-Stücke. Und einfach alle möglichen seltsamen, zufälligen Gegenstände, die ich auf Flohmärkten finde.\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingspodcast?\r\nDas hängt sehr von meiner Stimmung ab. Mein Wohlfühl-Podcast ist „My Favorite Murder“, vor allem wegen der Beziehung und des Geplänkels zwischen Karen und Georgia; dasselbe gilt für „Welcome to Hell“, wo es mich entspannt, Daniel und Dane beim Scherzen zuzuhören. Ich hatte auch schon Tage, an denen ich „Betwixt the Sheets“, „Criminal“, „Hollywoodland“, „Lore“ und andere am Stück gehört habe.\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingsbuch?\r\nIch mag Bücher mit moralisch zwiespältigen Figuren und Bücher, in denen es um Frauen geht, die eine emotionale Krise durchleben (viele davon wurden von Frauen geschrieben). Vor allem in den dunklen Wintermonaten gönne ich mir dieses heimliche Vergnügen, mir die Hörbuchversionen einiger Bücher während der Arbeit noch einmal anzuhören. „The Shining“ und „The Haunting of Hill House“ haben eine richtig gemütliche Horror-Atmosphäre; außerdem habe ich mir „My Year of Rest and Relaxation“ schon ein paar Mal angehört.\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingszitat?\r\nImmer wenn es mal schwierig wird, erinnere ich mich daran, dass „der beste Ausweg immer der Weg hindurch ist“ (Robert Frost). Es gibt auch dieses Zitat von Brancusi, an das ich denke, wenn es mir schwerfällt, ein neues Projekt in Angriff zu nehmen: „Dinge zu schaffen ist nicht schwer; schwer ist es, uns in die richtige Geisteshaltung zu versetzen, um sie zu schaffen.“\r\nWelche Serie hast du zuletzt am Stück geschaut?\r\nNicht die letzte, aber ich würde mir sehr wünschen, „Fleabag“ und „Succession“ noch einmal ganz von vorne sehen zu können.\r\nWas war das letzte Konzert, auf dem du warst?\r\nDas Konzert, das mir wirklich in Erinnerung geblieben ist, war ein Auftritt von Hania Rani während eines Jazzfestivals in Cluj. Es war Nacht, es waren nur sehr wenige Zuschauer da, es gab ein paar Lichter, und wir saßen auf dem Rasen in einem Park. Es herrschte eine sehr intime Atmosphäre.\r\nGibt es irgendetwas, bei dem du dich als Experte bezeichnest?\r\nIch kann die Epoche eines Gemäldes oder eines historischen Films ziemlich genau einschätzen, wenn ich mir nur die Kleidung anschaue. Ich habe eine Schwäche für historische Kostüme.\r\nWenn ein Auftraggeber dir genug Geld zahlen würde, um dir ein Jahr Auszeit zu nehmen und zu schaffen, was immer du willst – ein offener Auftrag, ganz ohne Einschränkungen –, was würdest du dann liefern?\r\nZunächst würde ich in ein größeres Atelier mit einem riesigen Arbeitstisch und vielen leeren Wänden umziehen und wieder damit beginnen, mit traditionellen Techniken zu experimentieren. Außerdem würde ich bildende Kunst in meine Arbeit integrieren und mich an größeren Flächen und Werken versuchen. Vielleicht sogar an räumlichen 3D-Arbeiten, Druck- und Siebdrucktechniken. Momentan bin ich durch meinen Raum ziemlich eingeschränkt und arbeite hauptsächlich digital, obwohl ich versuche, meinen Illustrationen das Aussehen und die Haptik traditioneller Materialien auf Papier zu verleihen.\r\nGibt es eine Art von Auftrag, den du noch nicht gemacht hast, den du aber gerne machen würdest?\r\nFrüher habe ich davon geträumt, eines Tages einen Schal für Hermès zu entwerfen.\r\nWie hat sich deine Arbeit oder deine Praxis im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt?\r\nMir ist aufgefallen, dass mein Selbstvertrauen einen großen Unterschied bei der Arbeit an einem Projekt und beim Endergebnis ausmacht. Wenn ich mir meine alten Arbeiten anschaue, stelle ich fest, dass darin viele gute Ideen steckten, aber ich kann auch das Zögern erkennen. Würde ich dieselbe Idee heute noch einmal umsetzen, würde ich viel selbstbewusster vorgehen.\r\nWenn du keine Illustratorin wärst, was wärst du dann?\r\nEs wäre wahrscheinlich immer noch etwas im Bereich Kunst oder Design. Während meines Studiums habe ich Mode studiert und mich schon immer für Theater- und Filmkostüme sowie Stickereien interessiert. Vielleicht also etwas in diesem Bereich. Oder Malerin – das war eigentlich mein erster Traum; aber in diesem Bereich ist es noch schwieriger, „den Durchbruch zu schaffen“.\r\nWas ist die größte Herausforderung als Illustratorin?\r\nDie Schwankungen bei den Projekten; manchmal kommen mehrere tolle Projekte auf einmal, dann gibt es wieder Phasen der Flaute. Diese Pausen nutze ich, um an meinen persönlichen Projekten zu arbeiten und Dinge auszuprobieren, für die ich keine Zeit habe, wenn ich mit Kundenprojekten beschäftigt bin.\r\nWas ist der beste Rat, den du je bekommen hast?\r\nWie wichtig es ist, online präsent zu sein und ein Online-Portfolio zu haben.\r\n Hast du Tipps oder Ratschläge für andere Illustratoren?\r\nAls ich angefangen habe, hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass mir jemand gesagt hätte, wie wichtig Networking ist – sowohl, um gleichgesinnte Auftraggeber zu finden, als auch um Kollegen zu finden, mit denen man sich gut versteht und mit denen man ein Netzwerk aufbauen kann. Ich liebe es, von zu Hause aus arbeiten zu können, aber es ist auch sehr wichtig, Freunde aus der Branche zu haben, die einen verstehen und mit denen man sich austauschen kann. \r\n Hast du Tipps oder Ratschläge für andere Illustratoren?\r\nAls ich angefangen habe, hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass mir jemand gesagt hätte, wie wichtig Networking ist – sowohl, um gleichgesinnte Kunden zu finden, als auch um Kollegen zu finden, mit denen man sich gut versteht und mit denen man ein Netzwerk aufbauen kann. Ich liebe es, von zu Hause aus arbeiten zu können, aber es ist auch sehr wichtig, Freunde aus der Branche zu haben, die einen verstehen und die man um Rat oder Meinung bitten kann.\r\nWas hörst du dir an, wenn du arbeitest?\r\nDas hängt sehr davon ab, wie sehr ich mich konzentrieren muss. In der Anfangsphase eines Projekts, wenn ich Ideen und Konzepte entwickeln muss, brauche ich Ruhe oder einfach nur Naturgeräusche im Hintergrund. Once I found out I could make a career out of it, I knew that's what I wanted, in one form or another.\r\nDid you study illustration in college? \r\nI actually started going to an art-profiled school since first grade, all the way to high school. Then I went to the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) for my degree, as well my masters. I also spent a year abroad on Erasmus at the Academy of Art in Lodz, Poland, where I focused more on graphics and mixing techniques.\r\nWhere did you grow up? \r\n I grew up in Romania, in a small town, named Deva, in a quaint house with a garden. That's probably why plants appear so much in my work. I was growing up in the 90's and 00's, a time when my country was going through a lot of changes, and the world around me and the aesthetics were changing as well. My taste also expanded. For example, I used to really dislike old apartment buildings, but then I started to appreciate their character and the way people try to leave their mark on them.\r\nDo you have a childhood memory relating to art that you hold dear? \r\nWhen I was very little we didn't have internet, so when I was watching period dramas on tv (especially those set in the 18th century) I used to quickly sketch out the dresses as they appeared on screen. Then I would try and recreate them for my dolls, including the corsets, wigs and embroidery. I also remember spending a lot of time in the garden looking for insects to draw, or sketching out the neighbourhood cats that were lounging there. This quiet time spent in their company was very peaceful.\r\nCan you remember when you first saw art used in a commercial context?\r\nGrowing up, my mum tried to get me the most beautifully illustrated and whimsical books she could find in book-stores. I also had a few of my mum's and grandma's old books. This really shaped my taste; there were a lot traditional techniques there and I could see each illustrator's personal and unique style. \r\nWhere do you live now and what drew you there? \r\nAfter graduating university and masters, I remained in Cluj-Napoca, where I studied. It's a city that combines old and new, with a lively art scene, but also pretty quiet.\r\nDescribe your studio for us \r\nI live and work in the same place, which had been a dream of mine since I was little. What I do is very much part of my life, so I like being able to draw late into the night if I'm feeling inspired, or taking a break from work for small house chores. I have lots of plants and cosy lights, little trinkets I found in flea markets.\r\nDo you have a studio pet?\r\nNot unless you count plants as pets; I have the equivalent of a small greenhouse. And though I don't have any actual pets right now, I have cats staying over whenever any of my friends are away on trips.\r\nWho or What is your biggest inspiration? \r\nI get inspired by my life, small scenes I stumble upon in my walks, old houses, the way plants interact with the urban environment. I have also been keeping a dream diary for many years, and some of those elements and the atmosphere has crept up in my work.\r\nIf you could collaborate with another artist or creative of any genre, living or dead, who would it be?\r\nI don't necessarily have someone specific in mind, but I can say I got a lot of inspiration from the collaborations I had so far. For editorial illustrations especially I often have conversations with the piece's author, to find the best way to show the right ideas and emotions of the article. I find that bouncing ideas back and forth with someone who is passionate about what they do is very inspiring. \r\nWhat’s your favourite way to spend a day off?\r\nIt depends; a long walk in nature with friends always clears my mind and refreshes me. Also going to flea markets and doing a little scavenger hunt, going to exhibition openings and randomly meeting friends and acquaintances. On other days I just feel the need to recharge at home, cook something nice and watch movies with a face mask on.\r\nWhat causes are you passionate about?\r\nThe closest to my heart are causes related to women's rights, stopping violence against women and access to equal opportunities. Also causes related to social injustice.\r\nDo you adopt any environmental practices to be more sustainable?\r\nMy habits that could be called sustainable come from the way I was raised, though we didn't call it that way. I avoid food waste, also do most of the cooking myself. When going out, I mostly take the bus or walk, and I love hunting for vintage clothes.\r\nDo you collect anything?  \r\nI cannot stop buying delicate glassware and porcelain as thin as possible. It's not a collection per se, thought it ended up taking a whole lot of space for something that isn't a collection. Also, I just love silver jewellery, sometimes gold, especially vintage pieces. And just any weird random objects I find in flea markets.\r\nWhat's your favourite podcast?\r\nThis depends a lot on my mood. My comfort podcast is 'My Favorite Murder', mostly due to the relation and banter between Karen and Georgia; same goes for 'Welcome to Hell', where it relaxes me to listen to Daniel and Dane joke around. I've also had days binging on 'Betwixt the Sheets', 'Criminal', 'Hollywoodland', 'Lore', and others.\r\nWhat is your favourite book?\r\nI like books with morally grey characters, and books focused on women experiencing some sort of emotional crisis (a lot of them are written by women). Especially during the dark months of winter I have this guilty pleasure of re-listening to the audio version of a few books while I work. 'The Shining' and 'The Haunting of Hill House' have a really cosy horror vibe; I also re-listened a few times to 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation'.\r\nWhat is your favourite quote?\r\nWhenever things get tough, I remind myself that “the best way out is always through.” (Robert Frost). There is also this quote by Brancusi that I'm reminded of when it's difficult to start on a new project: \"Things are not difficult to make; what is difficult is putting ourselves in the state of mind to make them.\" \r\nWhat is the last show you binged?\r\nNot the last one, but I would love to be able to watch 'Fleabag' and 'Succession' for the first time all over again.\r\nWhat was the last concert you went to?\r\nThe one that really stuck with me was a Hania Rani concert during a  jazz festival in Cluj. It was night-time, there was a very small crowd, a few lights, and we were sitting on the grass in a park. There was this very intimate atmosphere.\r\nIs there any random thing you consider yourself an expert on?\r\nI can pretty accurately guess the period of a painting or historical movie just by looking at the clothes. I have a thing for historical costume.\r\nIf a client paid you enough money to take a year off and create whatever you want – an open brief - no constraints - what would you deliver?\r\nFirst of I'd move to a bigger studio with a huge work table and lots of empty walls and I'd go back to experimenting with traditional techniques. I would also integrate fine art in my work and try out larger surfaces and pieces. Maybe even some spatial, 3D pieces, printing and silkscreen techniques. Right now I am pretty constrained by my space, and mostly work digitally, though I try and give my illustrations the look and feel of traditional materials on paper.\r\nIs there a type of job you haven't done yet, but would love to do?\r\nI used to dream that one day I would get to design a scarf for Hermès.\r\nHow has your work or practice evolved over time?\r\nI've noticed that what makes a big difference in working a project and the end result is the confidence I have. Going through my old work I see that there were a lot of good ideas there, but I can see the hesitation. If I were to re-do the same idea now I would go about it with much more confidence. \r\nIf you were not an illustrator, what would you be? \r\nIt would probably still be something art or design related. During my university years I studied fashion and I've always been drawn to theatre\u002Ffilm costumes and embroidery. So maybe something in that field. Or a painter, this was my first dream actually; but that is an even more difficult field to “make it” in.\r\nWhat is the most challenging part of being an illustrator?\r\nThe fluctuation of projects; sometimes several amazing projects come all at once, then there are periods of hiatus. I take advantage of those breaks to work on my personal projects and try out things I don't have time for when I'm busy with client projects.\r\nWhat’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? \r\nThe importance of having an online presence and online portfolio.\r\n Do you have any tips\u002Fadvice for other illustrators?\r\nWhen I was starting out, I wish someone would have told me about the importance of networking; both to find like-minded clients, but also to find colleagues you connect with, that you can build a support group with. I love being able to work from home, but it's also very important to have friends from your field who understand you and you can go for advice or opinions to.\r\nWhat do you listen to when you work? \r\nIt depends a lot on how much I need to focus. In the early stages of a project, when I need to come up with ideas and concepts I need silence, or just nature sounds playing in the background.
