Ich begann in meiner Freizeit zu zeichnen, und im Laufe der Jahre führte mich dieser Weg ganz natürlich dazu, mich ernsthafter der Illustration zu widmen.\r\nHast du an der Hochschule Illustration studiert?\r\nJa, ich habe einen BFA-Abschluss in Illustration von der School of Visual Arts und einen MFA-Abschluss in „Illustration Practice“ vom Maryland Institute College of Art.\r\nWo bist du aufgewachsen?\r\nIch bin in Xi’an aufgewachsen, einer historischen Stadt in der chinesischen Provinz Shaanxi.\r\nKannst du dich daran erinnern, wann du zum ersten Mal Kunst in einem kommerziellen Kontext gesehen hast?\r\nIch glaube, das war auf Snackverpackungen, Tüten mit gepufften Snacks, auf denen Cartoon-Figuren abgebildet waren. Manchmal lagen Sammelkarten mit verschiedenen Figuren bei; das erinnert mich heute an frühe Versionen von „Blind Boxes“. Das ist wahrscheinlich meine erste Erinnerung an kommerzielle Illustration.\r\nWo wohnst du jetzt und was hat dich dorthin verschlagen?\r\nIch wohne derzeit in Journal Square, New Jersey, direkt auf der anderen Seite des Flusses gegenüber von Manhattan. Nach meinem Abschluss in Baltimore bin ich hierhergezogen, weil ich davon überzeugt bin, dass Illustration in einer Gemeinschaft besonders gut gedeiht. Von anderen Illustratoren und Fachleuten aus verwandten Bereichen umgeben zu sein, beflügelt meine Arbeit enorm. Außerdem habe ich bereits mein Studium in New York absolviert, sodass viele meiner engsten Freunde, meine Wahlfamilie, hier leben. Für Kreative macht es einen riesigen Unterschied, sich in einem fördernden und unterstützenden Umfeld zu bewegen.\r\nBeschreibe uns dein Studio.\r\nIch wohne in einer Wohnung mit einem Schlafzimmer, wobei das Wohnzimmer über eine eigene Arbeitsecke verfügt. Ich nutze einen höhenverstellbaren Schreibtisch (ein Muss für lange Arbeitstage!), und die Atmosphäre ist insgesamt modern und schick. Die Farbgestaltung habe ich sorgfältig aufeinander abgestimmt: Mein Arbeitsbereich wirkt eher sachlich, mit schwarzem Schreibtisch, dunkelgrauem Stuhl und minimalistischer Deko, damit ich mich besser konzentrieren kann. Der Wohnbereich mit Couch und Fernseher ist hingegen heller gehalten, dominiert von Weiß- und Hellblautönen sowie weicheren, runderen Möbeln. Mein Lieblingsplatz ist eine farbenfrohe Vitrine voller kleiner Skulpturen, Geschenke von Freunden, LEGO-Blumen sowie einer Mischung aus leuchtend bunten Gefäßen und Keramikstücken. An der Seite hängt eine fröhliche Uhr mit Sonnengesicht. Diese Ecke hebt sofort meine Stimmung.\r\nHast du ein Atelier-Haustier?\r\nJa! Ich habe eine siebenjährige Abessinierkatze namens Mùtóu. Meistens liegt sie zusammengerollt auf dem Sitzsack neben mir, während ich arbeite.\r\nWer oder was ist deine größte Inspirationsquelle?\r\nDas wechselt von Zeit zu Zeit, aber eine beständige Inspirationsquelle ist die Literatur – vor allem Belletristik, aber manchmal auch Sachbücher oder Essays. Die Erzählstruktur beim Schreiben liefert mir oft Ideen für mein visuelles Storytelling. Auch Möbeldesign inspiriert mich. Ich liebe es, Räume zu gestalten, und in gewisser Weise sind meine Illustrationen wie visuelle Innenräume. In letzter Zeit haben es mir besonders die Arbeiten des Innenarchitekten Richard Yasmine angetan. Seine Entwürfe haben definitiv beeinflusst, wie ich über Formen und Objekte denke.\r\nWenn du mit einem anderen Künstler oder Kreativen, gleich welcher Sparte, ob noch lebend oder bereits verstorben, zusammenarbeiten könntest: Wer wäre das?\r\nIch würde liebend gerne mit Wang Wei zusammenarbeiten, einem Dichter aus der späten Tang-Dynastie in China. Sein Werk hat mich schon immer fasziniert: Er verstand es, über die alltäglichsten Dinge zu schreiben und ihnen dabei eine tiefe Bedeutung zu verleihen. Eine seiner Zeilen „Hell strahlt das Mondlicht zwischen den Kiefern, und klares Quellwasser fließt über die Steine“ wirkt täuschend einfach, hinterlässt aber einen bleibenden Eindruck. Jedes Mal, wenn ich sie lese, bekomme ich eine Gänsehaut. Ich würde ihn nur zu gerne fragen, wie er das Alltägliche in etwas Zeitloses und Außergewöhnliches verwandelt, ein Ziel, das auch ich in meiner eigenen Arbeit verfolge.\r\nWie verbringst du am liebsten einen freien Tag?\r\nWahrscheinlich würde ich mir ein heiteres Liebesroman-Hörbuch anhören, während ich den ganzen Tag an einem Puzzle arbeite.\r\nWas ist dein wertvollster Besitz und warum?\r\nWahrscheinlich meine Nasendusche! Ich leide unter starkem Schnupfen, daher muss ich meine Nase mehrmals täglich spülen. Ohne sie könnte ich mich aufgrund der Beschwerden kaum auf irgendetwas konzentrieren.\r\nSammelst du irgendetwas?\r\nIch sammle Schmetterlings- und Insektenpräparate und fertige manchmal auch eigene Exemplare aus Protozoen an. Der Großteil meiner Sammlung befindet sich noch bei mir zu Hause in China.\r\nWas hörst du beim Arbeiten?\r\nDas hängt ganz von meiner Stimmung ab, es kann Musik, ein Podcast oder ein Hörbuch sein. Ich halte das gerne flexibel.\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingspodcast?\r\nDas ist ein chinesischer Podcast namens „Shén liáo ba Bangní“. Der Moderator ist Drehbuchautor und teilt seine Gedanken zu Filmen und zum Leben – es ist locker, aber aufschlussreich.\r\nWelche Platte hast du dir als Erste gekauft?\r\n„Longitude“ von The Frames, einer irischen Rockband aus Dublin.\r\nWer ist dein künstlerisches Vorbild?\r\nDefinitiv Lisk Feng. Sie hat mich im letzten Studienjahr an der SVA bei meinem Portfolio betreut und maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, dass ich meine eigene visuelle Sprache gefunden habe. Ihre Arbeiten wirkten zugleich verspielt und geordnet – riesige, spielzeugartige Objekte und Skulpturen von Hunden aus Metall und Fell. Die Atmosphäre war auf bizarre Weise niedlich, fast surreal. Die kuratorische Gestaltung des Raums machte den Ausstellungsbesuch zu einem echten Erlebnis.\r\nWenn ein Kunde dir genug Geld zahlen würde, damit du dir ein Jahr Auszeit nimmst und erschaffst, was immer du willst, völlig freie Vorgaben, keinerlei Einschränkungen, was würdest du abliefern?\r\nIch würde liebend gerne ein Buch zu einem soziologischen Thema machen, das mich interessiert, etwa die subtilen Dynamiken von Mobbing unter Mädchen, womit ich mich in letzter Zeit beschäftigt habe. Es wäre eine Mischung aus Illustrationen und Kurzgeschichten. Bei Gestaltung, Materialien und der gesamten Form des Buches würde ich weder Kosten noch Mühen scheuen. Ich möchte Thema und Format so miteinander verschmelzen, dass das Ergebnis absolut durchdacht und stimmig wirkt.\r\nGibt es eine Art von Auftrag, die du noch nicht übernommen hast, aber sehr gerne einmal machen würdest?\r\nEin Wandgemälde! Ich müsste es vielleicht nicht unbedingt selbst physisch an die Wand malen, aber ich würde liebend gerne eine ortsspezifische Illustration entwerfen, die sich in den öffentlichen Raum einfügt. Also, I did my undergrad in New York, so many of my closest friends—my chosen family—are here. As a creative, being in a nurturing, supportive environment makes all the difference.\r\nDescribe your studio for us\r\nI live in a one-bedroom apartment, and the living room has a designated work corner. I use a standing desk (a must-have for long work hours!) and the overall vibe is modern and chic. I’ve thoughtfully coordinated the colors—my work area is more serious, with a black desk and dark gray chair, and minimal decoration to help me stay focused. The lounge area, with its couch and TV, is brighter, with white and pale blue tones, and softer, rounder furniture. My favorite spot is a colorful display cabinet filled with small sculptures, gifts from friends, LEGO flowers, and a mix of vibrant jars and potteries. There’s a cheerful sun-face clock hanging on the side. That corner always lifts my mood.\r\nDo you have a studio pet?\r\nYes! I have a seven-year-old Abyssinian cat named Mùtóu. She’s usually curled up on the bean bag next to me while I work.\r\nWho or What is your biggest inspiration?\r\nIt changes from time to time, but one constant source of inspiration is literature—mainly fiction, but sometimes nonfiction or essays. The curatorial design of the space made it a truly enjoyable viewing experience.\r\nIf a client paid you enough money to take a year off and create whatever you want – an open brief - no constraints - what would you deliver?\r\nI’d love to make a book centered on a sociology-related topic that interests me—like the subtle dynamics of girl-on-girl bullying, which I recently became interested in. It would be a blend of illustration and short stories. I wouldn’t spare any effort and money on the book’s design, materials, and overall form.
