Nach all dieser Zeit des Beobachtens begann ich, mir Welten in meinem Kopf vorzustellen und diese erschaffen zu wollen. Kameras können das echte Leben festhalten und Filme Geschichten dokumentieren, aber nur durch das Zeichnen kann ich innere Geschichten ganz aus meiner eigenen Perspektive erzählen. In der Grundschule haben wir oft auf unsere Schultische gezeichnet, Figuren, Szenen, was auch immer wir uns gerade vorstellten, und ich glaube, dort entstand mein Wunsch, weiterzuzeichnen. Es mag idealistisch klingen, aber ich möchte diesem Gefühl einfach weiter nachgehen.\r\nHast du Illustration studiert?\r\nIch habe Illustration an der School of Visual Arts in New York studiert. Eigentlich hatte ich im Bereich Animation angefangen, bin dann aber später zur Illustration gewechselt. Es ist ein sehr offenes und vielfältiges Feld. Besonders viel Spaß hat mir die Teilnahme an den Kunstmessen der Hochschule gemacht.\r\nWo bist du aufgewachsen?\r\nIch bin hauptsächlich an zwei Orten aufgewachsen: in Suzhou (Provinz Jiangsu) in China und in Tokio, Japan. Beide Kulturen haben mich stark geprägt. Suzhou ist eine Stadt mit feuchtem Klima, die mich gelehrt hat, üppige, blattreiche Pflanzen zu zeichnen, während ich in Tokio in einem eher internationalen Umfeld mit echter Ästhetik und Kunst in Berührung kam.\r\nWo wohnst du aktuell und was hat dich dorthin verschlagen?\r\nIch wohne derzeit in Brooklyn, New York, werde aber bald nach Tokio ziehen. Ich habe vor Kurzem mein Studium abgeschlossen und wollte der hektischen Atmosphäre Manhattans entfliehen. Brooklyn ist viel ruhiger, es gibt mehr Grünflächen und Parks, und man ist schnell am Meer. Ein weiterer Grund ist, dass ich mit ehemaligen Kommilitonen zusammenlebe, wir zeichnen gemeinsam und kümmern uns um unsere Katze. Es ist schön, sich einen Teil unserer studentischen Routinen zu bewahren.\r\nBeschreibe uns dein Atelier.\r\nMein Atelier ist zwar noch nicht ganz fertig eingerichtet, aber es ist gemütlich und passt zu meinem Lebensstil. Ich habe nicht viel Platz, daher ist alles in einem kleinen Raum untergebracht: Bücher, Sammlerstücke, Plüschtiere, Kameras. Ich mag es, alles griffbereit zu haben, damit ich leicht an das komme, was ich gerade brauche. Auf meinem Schreibtisch stehen mein Computer und mein iPad, und die Wände sind mit Postkarten übersät, die ich liebe – viele davon stammen von Freunden oder Künstlern, die ich bewundere. Der tägliche Anblick dieser schönen Dinge an der Wand macht mich glücklich und dankbar.\r\nWenn du mit einem anderen Künstler oder Kreativen, egal welcher Sparte, ob lebend oder verstorben, zusammenarbeiten könntest: Wer wäre das?\r\nWenn ich mich entscheiden müsste, würde ich sehr gerne mit einem Dramatiker oder Komponisten zusammenarbeiten, jemandem wie der japanischen Komponistin Yuki Kajiura. Ich habe schon immer davon geträumt, das Cover-Artwork für ihre Musik zu gestalten. Ihre Kompositionen inspirieren mich zutiefst; sie dringen wie Poesie in meinen Geist ein und wecken in mir den Wunsch zu malen.\r\nWie verbringst du am liebsten einen freien Tag?\r\nIch liebe es, ans Meer zu fahren oder in einem Café zu sitzen, um die Ruhe zu genießen und die Welt um mich herum zu beobachten. Oft achte ich darauf, was die Leute tragen und wie sich Stile wandeln; das hilft mir, die aktuelle Jahreszeit besser zu erfassen.\r\nSammelst du irgendetwas?\r\nIch sammle für mein Leben gern Kameras und analoge Filme! Das ist eines meiner größten Hobbys. Oft lasse ich mich von meinen eigenen Fotografien inspirieren. Im Vergleich zu digitalen Aufnahmen sind die Farben bei analogem Film satter; sie fangen die Welt auf eine emotionalere Weise ein. Ich hoffe, dass meine Illustrationen eine ähnliche Beständigkeit besitzen, etwas, das Zeit und Raum überdauert.\r\nWas hörst du, wenn du arbeitest?\r\nMeistens passe ich meine Playlist an die Stimmung des Projekts an, an dem ich gerade arbeite. Persönlich mag ich psychedelische Musik, Shoegaze und japanische Titel aus der Showa- und Heisei-Ära. Ich kann alles von GARNET CROW, Yppah und Bôa empfehlen.\r\nWer ist dein künstlerisches Vorbild?\r\nIch bewundere viele Illustratoren und Designer, aber in letzter Zeit hat es mir besonders „Peregrinations of a Comet“ von J. J. Grandville angetan. Die Art und Weise, wie er Formen und Linien miteinander verschmilzt, wirkt zugleich harmonisch und präzise, es strahlt eine stille Ruhe aus, ähnlich der Stille des Nachthimmels. Die Pastellfarben haben eine so reiche Textur und gehen dennoch nahtlos in die Dunkelheit des Weltraums über. Auch „Reciprocal Accords“ von Wassily Kandinsky fasziniert mich, ein weiteres Werk, das mich immer wieder inspiriert.\r\nWer ist dein musikalisches Vorbild?\r\nIch würde sagen: die Band Bôa. Ihre Texte und Melodien vermitteln mir stets ein Gefühl der Ruhe. Wenn ich ihre Lieder höre, während ich durch die Stadt streife, fühlt es sich an, als würde ich mich in einem ruhigen Film bewegen, alles wird sanfter und poetischer, so als würde sich die Zeit gerade weit genug verlangsamen, damit ich durchatmen kann.\r\nWas ist dein Lieblingsbuch?\r\nMein Lieblingsbuch ist „Die Brücke von San Luis Rey“. Die Geschichte an sich ist ziemlich komplex und schwer zu fassen. Ich habe es während der Sommerferien in der Highschool in einem Antiquariat in San Francisco entdeckt. Ich habe mich sofort in diesen Laden verliebt, und auch in das Buchcover. Die Illustrationen im Inneren sind reich an Textur und Erzählkraft; das Buch ist mir wirklich im Gedächtnis geblieben.\r\nWelche Ausstellung hast du zuletzt gesehen und geliebt?\r\nDie Monet-Ausstellung in Tokio hat mir unglaublich gut gefallen. Die Werbematerialien waren wunderschön gestaltet, und die Innenraumgestaltung schuf eine frische, natürliche Atmosphäre. Besonders eindrucksvoll war der Raum, in dem die „Seerosen“ ausgestellt waren, ein kreisförmiger Raum, der eine ruhige, immersive Wirkung hatte.\r\nWelches Konzert hast du zuletzt besucht?\r\nGenau genommen war das letzte Konzert, das ich besucht habe, ein Auftritt eines befreundeten Cellisten an der Parsons School of Design. Außerdem habe ich mir eine Musical-Adaption von „Attack on Titan“ angesehen, aufgeführt von japanischen Schauspielern in New York. Es war ein unglaubliches und unvergessliches Erlebnis, ich würde es mir sehr gerne noch einmal ansehen.\r\nWenn du jeden beliebigen Ort der Welt besuchen könntest, wohin würdest du reisen?\r\nEs gibt so viele Orte, die ich besuchen möchte! Aber bei dieser Frage zieht es mich zu einem eher ungewöhnlichen Ort,  einem, von dem ich träume, den ich aber vielleicht nie erreichen werde. Vielleicht ein abgelegener Wald oder der Gipfel eines schneebedeckten Berges. Ich war schon einmal in Tibet; vielleicht wären es also die verborgenen Seen und Berge tief im Inneren der Region, Orte, die gefährlich, aber für mich zutiefst faszinierend sind. Und wenn ich an einen einzigen Ort zurückkehren könnte, dann wäre es mein Elternhaus. Es wird bald verkauft, aber ich habe es geliebt, nachts auf dem Dach zu liegen und in den Himmel zu schauen.\r\nGibt es etwas Ungewöhnliches, bei dem du dich als Experte betrachtest, oder ein verborgenes Talent?\r\nIch glaube, ich bin ziemlich gut darin, andere zu imitieren und ihre inneren Gefühle zu lesen. Das ist meine Art, eine Verbindung zu anderen herzustellen: Ich beobachte, höre zu und erfasse oft, was hinter den Worten liegt. Diese Sensibilität hilft mir, meine Arbeit so zu gestalten, dass sie die Innenwelt anderer Menschen anspricht.\r\nStell dir vor, du strandest auf einer einsamen Insel, ohne Strom und fließendes Wasser. Welche drei Kunstutensilien würdest du mitnehmen?\r\nEin Skizzenbuch, am besten eines, das schon fast voll ist. Ein paar Kohlestifte. Ich brauche dieses tiefe Schwarz. Und wahrscheinlich einen Anspitzer. Sollte ich Pflanzen finden, so karg sie auch sein mögen, würde ich sie in neue Werkzeuge verwandeln. So könnte ich die letzte Seite meines Skizzenbuchs mit Dunkelheit füllen und nur wenige weiße Stellen übrig lassen. Wenn es eines Tages jemand fände, sähe er die Welt, wie ich sie gesehen habe: Über dieser trostlosen Insel würden die Sterne leuchten, unberührt und unverfälscht, der schönste Himmel, den man sich vorstellen kann.\r\nGibt es eine Tätigkeit, die du noch nie ausgeübt hast, aber liebend gerne einmal machen würdest?\r\nWahrscheinlich etwas im Bereich der Kriminalistik. Als Kind habe ich immer davon geträumt, Detektiv zu werden, auch wenn mir dieser Beruf unerreichbar schien. Nun bin ich irgendwie Illustrator geworden und arbeite mich Schritt für Schritt voran. Ehrlich gesagt hätte ich das nie erwartet. Kann man als Illustrator wirklich seinen Lebensunterhalt bestreiten und eine Zukunft aufbauen? Das finde ich gerade noch heraus. Aber falls nicht, träume ich vielleicht doch weiter davon, Detektiv zu werden.\r\nWenn du kein Illustrator wärst, was wärst du dann?\r\nIch würde Psychologie studieren. Ich glaube, Illustration und Psychologie haben etwas gemeinsam: Beide versuchen, das auszudrücken und aufzudecken, was unter der Oberfläche verborgen liegt, sei es in uns selbst oder in anderen. Doch selbst wenn ich einen anderen Beruf ergriffen oder etwas anderes studiert hätte, würde ich weiterhin zeichnen. Zeichnen ist für mich etwas, das ich einfach tun muss. After spending so much time observing, I started imagining the world inside my head and wanting to create it. Cameras can capture real life, and film can document stories, but only drawing allows me to tell inner stories completely from my own perspective. In elementary school, we used to draw on our desks—characters, scenes, whatever we imagined—and I think that’s where my desire to keep drawing started. It might sound idealistic, but I just want to keep chasing that feeling.\r\nDid you study illustration in college? \r\nI studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. I actually started in the animation department, but later transferred to illustration. It’s a very open and diverse field. I especially enjoyed participating in the school’s art fairs.\r\nWhere did you grow up? \r\nI mainly grew up in two places: Suzhou, Jiangsu in China, and Tokyo, Japan. I’ve been deeply influenced by both cultures. Suzhou is a humid city that taught me how to draw lush, leafy plants, while Tokyo exposed me to real aesthetics and art in a more international setting.\r\nWhere do you live now and what drew you there? \r\nI currently live in Brooklyn, New York, though I’ll be moving to Tokyo soon. I recently graduated and wanted to leave the noisy atmosphere of Manhattan. Brooklyn is much quieter, with more greenery, parks, and easy access to the seaside. Another reason is that I’m living with former classmates—we draw together and care for our cat. It’s nice to retain some of our student routines.\r\nDescribe your studio for us \r\nMy studio is still a work in progress, but it’s comfortable and suits my lifestyle. I don’t have a lot of space, so I’ve packed everything into a small room—books, collectibles, plush toys, cameras. I like having everything close by so I can reach for what I need easily. Seeing those beautiful things on the wall every day makes me feel happy and grateful.\r\nIf you could collaborate with another artist or creative of any genre, living or dead, who would it be?\r\nIf I had to choose, I’d love to collaborate with a playwright or composer—someone like Japanese composer Yuki Kajiura. I’ve always dreamed of creating cover art for her music. Her compositions inspire me deeply; they slip into my mind like poetry and make me want to paint.\r\nWhat’s your favourite way to spend a day off?\r\nI love going to the seaside or sitting in a café to enjoy some quiet time and observe the world around me. I’ll often watch what people are wearing and how styles change, and it helps me better understand the current season.\r\nDo you collect anything?  \r\nI love collecting cameras and film! It’s one of my biggest hobbies. I often draw inspiration from my own photographs. Compared to digital, film colors are richer and capture the world in a more emotional way. I hope my illustrations can have the same lasting power, it’s something that transcends time and space.\r\nWhat do you listen to when you work?\r\nI usually match my playlist to the mood of the project I’m working on. Personally, I enjoy psychedelic music, shoegaze, and Japanese tracks from the Showa and Heisei eras. I recommend anything by GARNET CROW, Yppah, and Bôa.\r\nWho is your art hero? \r\nI admire many illustrators and designers, but recently I’ve been particularly drawn to Peregrinations of a Comet by J. J. Grandville. The way he fuses shapes and lines feels both harmonious and precise—it brings a quiet stillness, like the calm of the night sky. The pastel color palette has such a rich texture, yet it blends so seamlessly with the darkness of space. I’m also fascinated by Reciprocal Accords by Wassily Kandinsky—it’s another piece that continues to inspire me.\r\nWho is your music hero? \r\nI would say the band Bôa. Their lyrics and melodies always bring me a sense of calm. Listening to their songs while wandering through the city feels like walking inside a quiet film—everything becomes softer, more poetic, as if time slows down just enough for me to breathe.\r\nWhat is your favourite book?\r\nMy favorite book is The Bridge of San Luis Rey. The story itself is quite complex and elusive. I found it during a summer break in high school, at a vintage bookstore in San Francisco. I fell in love with that bookstore, and also with the book’s cover. The illustrations inside are rich in texture and narrative—it really stayed with me.\r\nWhat was the last exhibition you saw and loved?\r\nI really loved the Monet exhibition in Tokyo. They did a beautiful job with the promotional materials and created a fresh, natural atmosphere in the interior design. The room where the Water Lilies were displayed was especially memorable—it was a circular space, and it felt serene and immersive.\r\nWhat was the last concert you went to?\r\nStrictly speaking, the last concert I attended was a performance by my friend, a cellist, at Parsons School of Design. I also went to a musical adaptation of Attack on Titan, performed by Japanese actors in New York. It was an incredible and unforgettable experience—I’d love to see it again.\r\nIf you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? \r\nThere are so many places I want to visit! But this question makes me want to choose somewhere unlikely, somewhere I dream of but might never reach. Maybe a remote forest or the summit of a snow-covered mountain. I’ve been to Tibet before, so perhaps it would be the hidden lakes and mountains deep within the region—places that are dangerous but deeply compelling to me. And if I could return to one last place, it would be my childhood home. It’s being sold soon, but I used to love lying on the rooftop at night, staring into the sky.\r\nIs there any random thing you consider yourself an expert on\u002Fany hidden talents?\r\nI think I’m quite good at mimicry—and reading people’s inner emotions. It's my way of connecting with others: I observe, listen, and often grasp what lies beneath their words. This sensitivity helps me shape my work in a way that resonates with other people’s inner worlds.\r\nYou are stranded on a desert island with no power or running water. What 3 art supplies would you take?\r\nA sketchbook—ideally one that’s almost full. A few charcoal pencils. I need that deep black. And probably a sharpener. If I find any plants, no matter how barren, I’ll transform them into new tools. That way, I can fill the last page of my sketchbook with darkness, leaving behind only a few white spaces. If someone finds it one day, they’ll see the world I saw: above this desolate island, the stars would shine, untouched and unpolluted—the most beautiful sky imaginable.\r\nIs there a type of job you haven't done yet, but would love to do?\r\nProbably something related to crime investigation. As a child, I always dreamed of being a detective, even though that kind of job felt far out of reach. Now, I somehow ended up as an illustrator—still working my way forward. I never expected it, honestly. Can being an illustrator really sustain a life and future? I'm still finding out. But if not, maybe I’ll keep dreaming about becoming a detective after all.\r\nIf you were not an illustrator, what would you be? \r\nI would study psychology. I think illustration and psychology have something in common: both try to express and uncover what’s hidden beneath the surface, either in ourselves or others. But even if I pursued another career or studied a different field, I would still keep drawing. Drawing, to me, is something I simply have to do. It’s what brings me joy—purely and
