Craig Foster, MSMI, CMI, is an experienced medical illustrator and animator who has produced award-winning visuals for Time Life Medical, major pharmaceutical corporations, medical device manufacturers, and biotechnology companies. A member of the Association of Medical Illustrators and a Certified Medical Illustrator, Craig has formal training in the arts and a graduate degree in medical illustration from the Medical College of Georgia.

What drew you to illustration/design? Ever since I was a kid I was interested in drawing. Even at that age, I knew I wanted to do something that would allow me to be creative. Do you have any formal design training? I have a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master’s of Science in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia’s Health Sciences University). Where are you originally from? Dearborn, Michigan. Where do you live now & what drew you there? I currently live in Peekskill, NY. I was drawn to the town of Peekskill because of the active arts community which provides me with camaraderie and inspiration. Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? My studio is in the second floor of a historic building in downtown Peekskill. I have an area for my computers, a workshop, and an area for various painting and sculpting projects. Who or What is your biggest inspiration? My Grandmother and my parents were very encouraging to me early in my life. Along the way, I’ve had many great teachers and colleagues who have provided inspiration and wisdom. I find inspiration everywhere. How do you get your ideas? I don’t have a real formula for my ideas, different methods of brainstorming, flow charts, environmental influences, and happenstance all play a role in my idea generating process. Do you collect anything? I collect experiences and memories, and an occasional pint glass when I stumble upon a micro brewery that I like. What are your interests outside of illustration? My greatest joy outside of illustration is travelling on my motorcycle. Whether a short ride, a day trip, or a longer adventure, I find that riding helps me stay focused and relaxed. I also like to hike, camp, and occasionally fish. What is the first record you bought? Van Halen – Diver Down. If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? I would probably be a really bad guitar player. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Do what you love and the money will follow. If you could take a holiday leaving tomorrow, where would you go & what would you do? I’d hop on my motorcycle and ride, no plan, no agenda. Do you have any pets? I have an Australian Terrier named Boo who is convinced she is a person.
