The name cartoon comes from the French term carton, because the first cartoon figures were drawn on cardboard. If the subject matter becomes more serious or political, a cartoon becomes a caricature. In the comic strip, entire picture stories are told over several sequences, and an animated comic strip becomes a cartoon. Comic pop art and caricature achieve a visual impact in advertising.
