Training

Decue has an MFA in Illustration Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and before that she studied Digital Media Art at the Zhejiang University of Media and Communications in China.

Approach

Different compositions, and bold colors in a limited palette are what interest Decue, and she enjoys drawing figures and creating patterns. Most of her work is done using Photoshop and Illustrator, but she also combines hand-made textures, screenprinting and collage work to give her illustrations something extra.

Styles

Lifestyle and fashion are often topics in Decue’s work, and she strives to make an emotional connection with those who see her pictures. When she does fashion illustration, she likes to draw long, thin figures in a freehand style, often with bizarre colours. Her lifestyle images usually have a more restrained palette, geometric shapes and patterns, and interesting brush and paper textures. She also creates graphic art and infographics, and here she goes for a cleaner look, using simple vector shapes and geometric forms.

What drew you to illustration/design?I love drawing, I wanted to make my hobby into a career.Do you have any formal design training?I have earned MFA degree from Maryland Institute College of Art’s Illustration Practice program.Where are you originally from?Shenzhen, China.Where do you live now & what drew you there?I am currently living in Los Angeles, I love the weather and plants here and the city is very hippie and artistic, people are very relax.Where is your studio and can you describe it for me?I work at home. My studio equipment has a corner table with a Herman Miller Aeron chair, two apple laptops and my Wacom 13HD tablet. Describe the view from your studio window?It's near echo park neighborhood, I can see my neighbor's garden and their dog, and a little bit uphill sidewalk.Who or What is your biggest inspiration?My life and the people surrounding me. How do you get your ideas?I will do research first, and brainstorm/sketch out different things pop in my mind, and find connection between them, play them around, to create interesting composition.Do you collect anything?I like to collect picture books, metal button pins, designer shoes. I like all things related to fashion, shopping, cooking. I like reading books about art, watching movies, and to take notes/screenshot the scenes that I like, they all give me inspirations.Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed.I just complete a project for Vogue China x Audi to promote Audi's new sport car A7, they want me to do a series icon featured 3 countries - Japan, Germany and Italy to make them into gif image.What would be your dream job/commission?Create and design illustrations for fashion house, fashion designer and clothing.Who is your art hero?I love Picasso. He was very smart and extremely talented. Every time I look at his work, I can find something new and different.Who are your musical heroes?Blondie and David Bowie.If you were not an illustrator, what would you be?Probably a designer or painter. I don't know what else to do if I am not drawing.What's the best advice you've ever been given?Love what you do, do what you love.If you could travel back in time which period would you visit & why?60's, art's golden age.
