Interview
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Jürgen: After the reunification in Germany in 1990 the market was open. It had been almost impossible to work as illustrator in the GDR. Therefore I was rather a graphic designer, working for exhibitions and trade shows, packaging, logo and typography. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Jürgen: I studied graphic design in Berlin. Question: Where do you live? Jürgen: In Schwerin, Germany. Question: Can you describe your studio for me? Jürgen: I have two rooms of our apartment for my work. Question: What is your biggest inspiration? Jürgen: My curiosity. Question: How do you get the best ideas? Spontaneously. Every job is an inspiration. Question: What technique do you use? Jürgen: I draw traditionally with my hand and use all kinds of techniques to optimize any kind of job. The technique is the medium for the statement. Question: Tell us about a favorite project you have recently completed. Jürgen: I did illustrations for a book about the Arctic and Antarctic. Question: What would be your dream job/Commission? Jürgen: I am open for any kind of job, the more challenging, the better. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Jürgen: The old masters. Question: Do you keep a sketchbook? Jürgen: No, just loose papers. Question: What are your hobbies? Jürgen: My profession is also my hobby. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Jürgen: Painter. Question: If you could travel back in time, where would you go to? Jürgen: I think that the time we live in now is more exciting than anything in the past. Art was never as free as it is now. Question: What is the funniest thing you have ever done? Jürgen: Caricatures. Question: If you won the lottery, would you still work as illustrator? Jürgen: Yes, definitely! Why should I stop doing what I like best? Question: Do you collect anything?
