Organic calligraphy from India

Jyotirmayee Patra - also known as JP - is India's leading artist of custom typography playfully adorned with beautiful flowers, intriguing animals, graphic shapes and vibrant textures.

Training

JP studied graphic design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India’s leading design institute. She learned professional calligraphy from Harvest Crittenden, and has taught copperplate calligraphy workshops.

Approach

Most of JP’s calligraphic or typographic pieces begin with an inspiring quote, or copy relating to the brief. She forms this and then creates illustrations to surround it, mixing detailed flowers, characters and foliage, and playing with the composition until it strikes the right balance. Her illustrations are built up in much the same way. Beginning with the central character, she adds and tweaks the supporting elements to create the overall visual. JP uses Procreate to explore, and renders her digital illustrations in Adobe Photoshop. For some vector-based projects she uses Adobe Illustrator.

Styles

JP’s type and illustrations are infused with nature, with bold letter forms often softened by decorative, whimsical detail. Her style developed first through type-based illustrations in black and white, while her newer work dazzles with its bright colours.

What led you to become an illustrator? The journey started way back in my childhood. As a shy kid, I guess drawing was the only creative outlet to express myself back then. In no time art grew into a passion which eventually led me to pursue design education & become a full-time illustrator. Did you study illustration at college?Yes. National institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.Where did you grow up?Odisha, India.Where do you live now and what drew you there? I’ve lived in New Delhi, India for the most part. This city in a nutshell is a land of rich history, colorful bustling lanes, mouth-watering food & quirky fashion. It’s a beautiful chaos. The ever-evolving art scene makes it a perfect home for artists like us. Although I’ve temporarily moved back to my hometown in Odisha, Delhi will always be my second home. Describe your studio for us.My laptop & iPad is basically my studio at the moment. I sometimes work from my living room but mostly I set up a tiny space in our beautiful front yard where we have a giant mango tree. I love spending my working hours outside soaking up all the nature & inspiration.Who or What is your biggest inspiration?Dana Tanamachi. She is a legend! Her stunning work opened me up to the world of lettering, which I never knew existed. How do you get your ideas?My ideas originate from the most simple & everyday things of life. They also have a relatable factor. Tell us about a favorite project you’ve recently completed.I recently created a series of illustrations for an Ice tea company called ‘BrewHouse’ as a part of their rebranding. It’ll be launching soon & I can’t wait to see them out in the wild. What would be your dream job/commission?Large scale illustrations for a design fest/event. Why is illustration such a powerful medium?Illustration being a visual medium transcends language & cultural barriers. It can create a sense of familiarity by evoking emotions, which makes it quite a powerful communication tool.What makes a really good client brief?Setting clearly defined expectations, budget, timelines & most importantly giving the creative freedom makes for an ideal client brief.How much of your work is hand drawn?20% of my work is purely pencil & paper. The other 80% is a mix of digital & hand drawn.What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?Take that leap of faith.If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet and why? Neville Goddard, a profoundly influential teacher of LOA (Law of Attraction). I’d love to meet him & express my sincere gratitude for his valuable teachings & for completely changing my perspective of life.
