Mark Gmehling is working with Cinema 4D for about 10 years and he is specialised in character design, animation and
rigging. He studied art, graphic design and marketing and worked in advertising for a while then got self employed as illustrator.
Alongside this he works as teacher for graphic design, communication design and digital illustration two days a week at a university in Germany: WAM Die Medienakademie.
Question: What drew you to illustration/design? Mark: I am not satisfied with just the development of ideas, the final design is what is equally important to me. Question: Do you have any formal design training? Mark: Not really. Fine arts and graphic design. Question: Where do you live? Mark: In Dortmund, Germany. Question: Can you describe your studio for me? Mark: A developed attic , lots of tables. lots of space, but still too small. Question: What is your biggest inspiration? Mark: The triviality and absurdity of human existence. Question: What gives you the best ideas? Mark: Thinking things through, forgetting it again and then to judge it in a different light and then think about it again. Question: What technique do you use? Mark: Analog in any technique that makes sense for the project, but in the end mostly everything is digital. Question: Tell us about a favorite project you have recently completed. Mark: I enjoy my free work that I do for exhibitions. Question: What would be your dream job/Commission? Mark: I like designing large walls in public areas. Question: Who are your illustration heroes? Mark: Those who don´t take themselves too seriously. Question: Do you keep a sketchbook? Mark: Hundreds of them. Question: What are your hobbies? Mark: Playing music. Question: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Mark: Singer in a Jazz-Punkband. Question: Who would you like to meet? Mark: I don´t know. Question: If you could travel back in time, where would you go to? Mark: Back on holidays on demand. Question: What kind of music do you listen to? Mark: Old school HipHop, Funk, Electro, as long as it grooves. Question: If you won the lottery, would you still work as illustrator? Mark: Definitely on my personal projects. Question: Do you collect anything? Mark: I try to avoid it and limit my collection to experiences. Question: Do you have a favorite game? Mark: No.
