Big eyes, big smiles, bright colors and lots of fun.

Based in Gijón in the North of Spain, he has over a decade of experience as an illustrator, meeting the needs of some of the biggest brands in Spain and around the world. His career began thanks to his hands-on approach. Back in the early 2000s, he was launching a t-shirt company. They had everything they needed but the money to pay an illustrator, so he decided to do it himself. Pintachan’s influences include comics, illustrated books, old album covers, 60s magazines and a whole range of retro music, and he’s been making things since childhood.

Approach

Pencils, crayons, iMac, Cintiq, Pintachan uses a whole range of tools as he draws his characters and develops his palettes. He digitises his sketches, turns them into vector illustrations, then adds texturing in Photoshop.

Style

Pintachan’s style is retro, naïve, childish, pop and whimsical, but there’s plenty of subtlety to it as well. His cartoonish visual language is used to express all sorts of ideas that aren’t confined to the world of children.

What drew you to illustration/design?I think it all started when I was still a kid, and my father used to take me to bookshops with him. While he searched for large Architecture books, he left me parked at the children's books section. I always chose to bring home some tale books, which I still keep and are still a source of inspiration. I learned to count a long time ago but I still flick through Best Counting Book Ever by Richard Scarry very often!Where are you originally from?I'm from sunny Seville, in the South of Spain.Where do you live now & what drew you there?I live in the green and rainy Gijón, in the North of Spain. It's my wife's hometown.Where is your studio and can you describe it for me?I share my studio with my wife. I'm lucky enough to have a big space for it at home, in the attic.Describe the view from your studio window?I chose the attic because of its huge windows. I can see a landscape of mountains & trees, and my two sons’ school!Who or What is your biggest inspiration?Every single person who dares to live life their own way.How do you get your ideas? From everyday life. A song, a movie, an overheard conversation between two strangers, any of my sons’ wisecracks.Do you collect anything?Vintage children's books, Sci-Fi and horror movies from the 50s and old 8-bit videogames.Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed.I was commissioned to design the band La Casa Azul's merchandising. I'm a big fan of their songs so I was deeply excited about the assignment. After that I got to tour with the band, it was great!What would be your dream job/commission?I dream of illustrating a Disney attraction, the way that Mary Blair did. Of course along with Mike Curb Congregation music as she did.What are your interests outside of illustration?I enjoy listening to music, especially from the 50's and 60's. I love movies, particularly Nouvelle Vague ones and also sci-fi B Movies. I enjoy playing Lego with my kids. And overall, I'm a confessed liquorice addict.
