Big eyes, big smiles, bright colors and lots of fun - the Spanish artist Pintachan creates lively and funny pictures that get their charm not least from their simplicity.

Pintachan has a Degree in Biology. After several failed experiments at the University labs – which almost ended up catastrophically –, he decided to quit test tubes and take on brushes. From then on, although he's self-taught, he hasn't stopped studying and practising to be a little better every day. When he starts a job, he likes to know both client and project as well as he can. He always starts with pencil sketches and, once the style is polished, we works on them to add colour and texture. He likes the client to participate on the creative process, reviewing the sketches if necessary, so that the result is as satisfactory as possible for both parts. Retro, naïve, childish…These are words that come to mind when describing Pintachan´s work. It’s an aesthetic language that he identify himself with, though it is mainly a direct and kind medium to wrap ideas or concepts that don’t necessarily belong to a kids’ world.

What drew you to illustration/design?I think it all started when I was still a kid, and my father used to take me to bookshops with him. While he searched for large Architecture books, he left me parked at the children's books section. I always chose to bring home some tale books, which I still keep and are still a source of inspiration. I learned to count a long time ago but I still flick through Best Counting Book Ever by Richard Scarry very often!Where are you originally from?I'm from sunny Seville, in the South of Spain.Where do you live now & what drew you there?I live in the green and rainy Gijón, in the North of Spain. It's my wife's hometown.Where is your studio and can you describe it for me?I share my studio with my wife. I'm lucky enough to have a big space for it at home, in the attic.Describe the view from your studio window?I chose the attic because of its huge windows. I can see a landscape of mountains & trees, and my two sons’ school!Who or What is your biggest inspiration?Every single person who dares to live life their own way.How do you get your ideas? From everyday life. A song, a movie, an overheard conversation between two strangers, any of my sons’ wisecracks.Do you collect anything?Vintage children's books, Sci-Fi and horror movies from the 50s and old 8-bit videogames.Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed.I was commissioned to design the band La Casa Azul's merchandising. I'm a big fan of their songs so I was deeply excited about the assignment. After that I got to tour with the band, it was great!What would be your dream job/commission?I dream of illustrating a Disney attraction, the way that Mary Blair did. Of course along with Mike Curb Congregation music as she did.What are your interests outside of illustration?I enjoy listening to music, especially from the 50's and 60's. I love movies, particularly Nouvelle Vague ones and also sci-fi B Movies. I enjoy playing Lego with my kids. And overall, I'm a confessed liquorice addict.
