Vibrant and graphic, with strong line work and a fantastic design sensibility

Davi’s range is immense. From isometric maps to infographics and on to character-led editorial spreads, he’s an illustrator who can take any concept and push it to the next level. Clients love the way he picks up a brief and quickly progresses it, with a strong respect for deadlines. The lively nature of his work is born from the vivacious city he lives in. São Paulo has always been a big inspiration with him – its graffiti, its architecture, its transport system and society itself. Davi is a multi-award-winning artist with two masters degrees in Digital and Editorial Design – from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo and Istituto Europeo di Design respectively.

Approach

Davi’s design-led process focusses on the brief, research and semiotics relevant to the message. The colour and emotion of everyday life feed into each project as he uses Photoshop to create imagery in an array of styles.

Style

On first impression, Davi’s artwork is graphic and contemporary with a vector-like feel to it. However, he is extremely versatile and often conjures an organic look with pencil, ink and watercolour finishes.

What led you to become an illustrator? I think that like most artists and designers, I was a curious child who liked to create things. As a teenager I started to take on some small illustration work for t-shirt brands and started working at a custom motorcycle shop helping with designs. At that time I also posted some work on the internet until some editors saw my work, liked it and I'm still at it today.Did you study illustration in college? I have a degree in Digital Design, a postgraduate degree in Editorial Design (Istituto Europeo di Design), and a master's degree in Design and Information Technology (PUC-SP), but when I was young I took independent illustration courses.Where did you grow up? I grew up in the downtown of an industrial city called Osasco, in the state of São Paulo (fun fact: today Osasco is known as the hot-dog city, because it's the second city in the world where people most consume hot-dogs, weird but true!)Do you have a childhood memory relating to art that you hold dear? I remember that in my grandmother's house there was an encyclopaedia from the 60s that was full of illustrations and infographics. That fascinated me.Where do you live now and what drew you there? Today I live in São Paulo, in the Perdizes neighborhood. It's a small neighborhood, but with a very rich cultural history. Famous bands like Os Mutantes were born there, and my studio is next to Sesc Pompéia, one of the city's main architectural works, designed by Lina Bo Bardi.Describe your studio for us It's a two-story house with lots of books and plants. On the ground floor there is a reception area with a vertical garden and meeting space, and on the second floor is where I carry out work. Visually it has a brutalist tropical style.Do you have a studio pet?My studio has two trees and a bunch of plants, maybe they are my pets!Who or What is your biggest inspiration? In the world of illustration, I've always really liked the work of Katsuhiro Otomo and Kako. But in life, I believe that several people inspire me.If you were funded for a dream artist residency, where would you go, and what would you create?I think I will go anywhere in the world, but I intend to visit Asia and France soon.If you had to write your own epitaph in one sentence, what would it say?“Nóis capota mas não breka”. In a direct translation it would be something like - "We roll over but we don't brake". It was a common phrase seen on truck bumpers. It can be interpreted as: keep going, no matter the problems.What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?I really enjoy tinkering and driving my 1977 Maverick Grabber V8 when I have free time.What's your most prized possession and why?My health and the health of the people I love.How do you separate your work life from your home life?As a freelancer, this is a tough one. I basically just figure things out as they come.Do you adopt any environmental habits to be more sustainable?I've always had a fairly moderate consumption of goods, mainly in clothing and electronics. (If it were possible, I'd still be using my first smartphone today).Do you collect anything? Yes, old design and illustration books and magazines.What do you listen to when you work?I think I'm one of the few artists who doesn't enjoy listening to music while working. When I'm producing, I like to focus as much as possible on the work.What is the first record you bought? I think it was the first Gorillaz album.What was your favourite assignment ever?Last year I worked on a F1 book that was really amazing.Who is your art hero? Andy Warhol.Who is your design hero? The Designers Republic.Who is your music hero? Elvis.If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Probably something related to creativity or visual production.Have you any hidden talents? I think I have a good visual memory, especially for faces.What is your go-to comfort food?Hamburger with French Fries and Coke.What movie can you watch over and over?Tarantino and Jackie Chan Movies.What is the last show you binged?Kamen Rider.What was the last exhibition you saw and loved?The Hajime Sorayama expo.What was the last concert you went to?Blues Brothers cover band.What is your favourite book?Not my favorite, but 'Sapiens' by Harari and 'Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits' by Nietzsche, impacted me a lot at college.What is your favourite quote?“I know that I know nothing”.Is there any random thing you consider yourself an expert on?I've been studying mechanics lately, but I'm far from being an expert in this.What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Nothing changes if you don't change.What career advice would you give your younger self?Keep walking, it will work out.Do you have any tips/advice for other illustrators?We love our work, but sometimes breaks are necessary
