How did you come to decide you wanted to become an illustrator?I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a creative career. But fine art was too open-ended for me—both in terms of the creative process and professionally. For me, illustration is the perfect alternative.Did you study illustration?I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Münster.What techniques do you use?I love painting and drawing traditionally. Whether it’s watercolor or colored pencils, the main thing is that I can feel the paper. However, I add the final touches to my illustrations digitally. Both forms—digital and analog—have their strengths and weaknesses. I think the combination of both techniques is what makes the illustration shine in the end. Where did you grow up?In the Sauerland region.Do you have a childhood memory related to drawing or art that’s important to you?On my first day of school, I was interviewed by the local press. In the interview, I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up: an artist. My grandma kept the newspaper clipping and framed it as a gift for me when I graduated with my bachelor’s degree. Where do you live now, and what drew you there?I live in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia. My studies brought me here. Do you have a pet in your studio?Our neighbor’s cat, Bonnie, likes to “knock” on the window to get some pets and treats. She’s successfully trained me to do that. Describe the view from your window.I look out at a huge Gothic church that’s home to a kestrel. I enjoy watching it circle around. Do you collect anything?I keep all the postcards I’ve received throughout my life.What are your interests outside of illustration?I love being around animals, which is why I often take in dogs to look after. I also go for a walk with two donkeys once a week. What makes for a good client briefing?Definitely communication on equal footing. Both parties need to feel mutual respect. Where nature can still be nature.
