What led you to become an illustrator? I’ve always loved to create letters. I think its shapes and variations can express a lot, and you can even complement the meaning of a phrase and give it strength.Did you study illustration in college ? I studied graphic Design at Universidad Autónoma del Caribe, in Barranquilla, Colombia.Where did you grow up? I grew up in sunny and colorful Barranquilla, the most important city in the northern coast of Colombia.Do you have a childhood memory relating to drawing/art that you hold dear? Yes! My grandfather used to paint; I remember every time he was doing a new painting, I would come to him and he would give me sheets of paper and colors to do my own creations.Where do you live now and what drew you there? I’m still living in Barranquilla. It’s my home and all my family and friends are here so I don’t see myself going anywhere elseDescribe your studio for us My studio is a combination between a workspace, a museum of things I like, an explosion of pastel colors and a movie theatreDo you have a studio pet?Yes, she runs my Human Resources Department, I even made her an ID! Her name is Fuuka and she’s a hyperactive and beautiful pug (my brother named her, don’t ask me what it means ??)Describe the view from your window I live in an apartment on a 4th floor and I can see all Barranquilla’s skyline from my window, and even Colombia’s largest River, the Magdalena, peeks in the horizon. It is stunningWho or What is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspirations are my mother and my grandma, because they raised both my brother and me and taught us that if you work hard and with passion, you can always get farHow do you get your ideas? I get ideas from everything that surrounds me, especially nature and colors and I consider myself lucky to have been born in a city so rich in culture and flora that colors and nature are always present Do you collect anything? Yes! I have a pin collection. I’ve gathered most of them from all my trips. My favorites are one I got in Venice, one from Alice in Wonderland (I love that movie) and one from GoodType that says “strength in letters”What are your interests outside of illustration? Movies, music (but, fun fact, I don’t like musicals that much) and embroidering What is the first record you bought? One from Luis Fonsi (yeah, I’ve always been a fan, since way before Despacito) that he even signed for me. What was your favourite assignment ever?I liked biology a lot when I was in school, I even considered studying medicine and becoming a pediatrician.What would be your dream commission?I would love to do something with Disney (either in movies, books, anything!) and Coca Cola.What is the best use of illustration you have ever seen? Animated movies, specially 2D. I think it is impressive what can be achieved with drawings and movie magic.Who is your art hero? Walt Disney, without a doubt. That man was a genius Who is your music hero? Shakira. And the fact that we were born in the same city makes it even better. #ColombianPowerIf you were not an illustrator, what would you be? A pediatrician If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet and why? My dad, who I couldn’t meet. I would love to hear the sound of his voice and listen to his storiesWhat themes or content in the world inspires you?I get inspired by a lot of things, from movies, pop culture, food, (especially desserts) traveling and culturesHow do you keep on trend and up to date in our quickly changing industry?Social media for designers are my best tool to keep myself up to date. I always look around on Dribbble, Pinterest and Instagram for the latest trends to get inspiration for my workWhat is your go-to comfort food?There’s a very typical dish from my country that I love very much. It is called Ajiaco, and it’s a chicken and potato (it actually has 3 different kinds of potatoes) soup. I love it, especially because my grandma used to make it and I used to invite my friends over and they loved it too. Actually, there’s a show on Netflix called Street Food, and the Ajiaco won the best street food award in Colombia’s episode (though I don’t know why since it is not a street food per se but oh well)What movie can you watch over and over?Tangled, The Vow and The Proposal. I’m a hopeless romantic What do you do when you have creative block?I throw away my iPad (not literally) and watch a movie or a show, prepare a meal, hang out with my friends (virtually now), etc. In other words, I get as far away as possible from my art. Then when I come back to it, I have a new vision.... if not, I repeat the process ??What is your favourite way to fill free time?
