What led you to become an illustrator? I've always drawn, ever since I was a kid. I read a lot of comics and watched a lot of cartoons. I think when I grew up I just wanted to keep doing what I already enjoyed when I was a kid. Did you study illustration in college? I studied Advertising and Marketing in college. I didn't have an illustration class, but I always studied at home, I always liked to see a lot of references.Where did you grow up? I grew up in the neighborhood of Pirituba in São Paulo, Brazil.Do you have a childhood memory relating to art that you hold dear? My father would always show up with a pad of fax machine paper at home. They were rolls of paper, and I spent all day drawing on it. I drew with what I had, pencil, paint, charcoal, chalk, etc.Where do you live now and what drew you there? I still live in the same city, I just left the neighborhood. I ended up coming more downtown, where there is more movement, but I always go back to my old neighborhood.Describe your studio for us A lot of action figures and comic books. I work alongside my wife, who is an English teacher. We share the space with Jorge, our stray dog who always sleeps on the yellow sofa I have behind my work chair. Pictures on the walls, skateboard decks and a closet with sneakers. Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Jack Kirby and Bruce Timm are two artists that I always take as inspiration, but the biggest ones are Ziraldo, Angeli and Larte.If you could collaborate with another artist or creative of any genre, living or dead, who would it be?I'd love to do a cover for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Or any project involving them.If you were funded for a dream artist residency, where would you go, and what would you create?I would love to work at Pixar on some character design project, to participate in the creation of the concepts.What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?Walk around in the morning and soak up the sun, have a beer on the street and buy some comics. Then play a bit of video games and meet up with some friends for the night.What's your most prized possession and why?I have an autographed painting of Angeli in my living room. He is one of my favorite artists, very important for Brazilian cartooning. I'm very happy to have this at home.How do you separate your work life from your home life?I work from home, so I really need to separate my professional life from my personal life. When I'm done working, I close the office and don't open it again until the next day to work, as if I came home every day. It's nice to have an environment just for working from home.Do you adopt any environmental habits to be more sustainable?I've been vegan for over 10 years. I believe veganism is essential for the environment. I also separate my garbage, recycle, reuse materials, etc.What do you listen to when you work? I listen to a lot of Rap and Punk Rock. I listen to a lot of Brazilian music like Jorge Ben, Adoniran Barbosa and Cartola.What is the first record you bought? A compilation of Nirvana's live songs. From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.What was your favourite assignment ever?I think all the work I do for bands I like, makes me happy. It's always a result makes me want to do more.Who is your art hero? Ziraldo, without a doubt.Who is your design hero?I love Frank Shepard Fairey. Who is your music hero? Sabotage and Mano Brown.If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Professional skateboarder.What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Draw every day.If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?I really want to get to know Belgium. Have you any hidden talents? (Read comic books, listened to punk rock!)Is there a work lesson you’ve had to learn the hard way?I have difficulty with all kinds of colors, I have a small degree of color blindness, but every time I go to color I have to learn the codes of the color palette, and that is very difficult.Do you have any tips/advice for other illustrators?Always stay up to date. Draw every day, look for references and always try to be original.
