What led you to become an illustrator? I drew all the time when very young and knew from early age that was what I wanted to do. My father was (and still is) also an illustrator, so I grew up surrounded by it. Do you have a childhood memory relating to drawing/art that you hold dear? My father was an airbrush illustrator. I remember standing on tiptoes trying to watch him work on his drawing board, often he’d put me on his knee and let me have a go with the airbrush, which absolutely fascinated me. Describe your studio for us I share a studio with my illustrator colleague Andy. We have a room in a big building designed for tech media companies in Alderley Park, Cheshire. Its full of computers and everything we need to create imagery! Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Anybody who’s made a difference to the world, be it an actor, artist, musician, sports person, scientist….the list goes on. How do you get your ideas? All around are instant illustration ideas, sometimes in places we least expect. Being a food illustrator, I tend to spend a long time in the fruit aisle and also perusing the packaging artworks! Do you collect anything? Strangely enough.. old photographs and world bank notes. What do you listen to when you work? When working alone, I prefer silence. When working in company, the music is varied but errs towards the hard rock spectrum, with random kitsch guilty pleasures here and there. What are your interests outside of illustration? Outside the whirlwind of two daughters, I’m a keen skier, fair weather skateboarder, film enthusiast, art lover and reluctant gym member! What is the first record you bought? We’re going back a long way, I’d like to say it was something cool but I’m pretty sure it was a Wombles record when I was a kid in the 70’s! What would be your dream commission? A huge campaign for the biggest chocolate manufacturer in the world! What makes a good client brief? One which has been very carefully considered, from a client confident in knowing what they want, and with all the relevant information included! How much of your work is hand drawn? It depends on the project. It can often start with pencil sketches which I then scan in and develop in Photoshop. Sometimes I draw straight off on screen using a Wacom tablet. As I work digitally, it’s best to get into that zone as soon as possible. Who is your music hero? Too many to list but the main culprits throughout my life have been..Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Ennio Morricone, Pistols, Clash… What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? It’s not what you put in, it’s what you leave out that makes the image! If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Off the back of Rendl mountain in St. Anton, Austria..on a perfect powder day! Have you any hidden talents? I’ve been told I cook a mean Paella! If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet and why? It’s probably something of a cliché, but I’d like to go back to 1890’s Montmartre and spend a day with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He was a genius who was completely at odds with his background and saw beauty in areas that were looked down upon at the time. It would also be very interesting to see and experience what it was really like back then. What is your go-to comfort food? Garlic prawns with a cold Chablis! What movie can you watch over and over? There are too many to choose from but stand outs would be the Sergio Leone epics Once Upon a Time in America and the West. Also the Jason Bourne films. What was the last exhibition you saw and loved? Van Gogh at the Tate. What is your go-to karaoke song? I’m not a huge karaoke fan but I once did a (forced) not half bad Elvis at a karaoke meal…..the audience disagreed. What is your favourite quote? Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans! (John Lennon) Is there any random thing you consider yourself an expert on? Bad jokes told to my daughters.
