Superama is color, rhythm, and attitude.

“No matter the technique, my works are colorful, playful, and full of hope,” says Superama.

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Amaranta came to the US and settled in Miami to become a successful animator with Nickelodeon. After that she pursued a freelance career, building her own creative brand – Superama – using her image-making and motion skills on global campaigns for some of the world’s biggest brands. There’s nothing not to love about Superama and her work. She’s passionate, idea-driven, professional and always meets her deadlines. Miami life is her biggest inspiration and it shows in her work – colourful flowers, pink skies, carnivals, the sea and having fun are what she loves. You can see her work on garments worn by Heidi Klum, Paula Abdul and Steve Aoki.

Approach

As a muralist, Amaranta paints in acrylics with BIG brushes and loses herself in the work – it’s meditative for her, and her devotion shines through with every project. In the digital world, she creates her illustrations on her iPad or Wacom tablet, using a Mac to put them in motion.

What led you to become an illustrator? I’ve been drawing since I can remember, so from an early age I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to creativity.Did you study illustration in college?Yes, I studied Illustration in Caracas, Venezuela. But since then I haven’t stopped. I’m always learning new tools and techniques. Actually right now I’m experimenting with AR illustrations. I’m a very curious person.Where did you grow up? I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. But I’ve been living in Miami for the past 20 years.Do you have a childhood memory relating to art that you hold dear?Yes, I do. My grandfather used to do neon signs with amazing fonts. So when I went to visit him I loved going to his garage where he worked and it looked like a mad scientist lab. I will always cherish those moments with him.Where do you live now and what drew you there?Right now I’m based in Miami. I came here when I worked for a corporate company that brought me from Caracas to Miami. When they closed the offices here and we were laid off I decided to stay because the political situation in my country was pretty bad.Describe your studio for us I have a space that I share with my husband that looks like an Art Store! We have all kinds of gadgets, software, and art materials. We are always creating and experimenting with new toys and it's always nice to have a person that can give you sincere feedback and helps you grow.Do you have a studio pet?We have a little bird called Kiwi.Who or What is your biggest inspiration?My biggest inspirations are the women in my life. Both of my grandmothers, my mom, and my sister of course. In the art world, I look up to Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, Judy Chicago, and Es Devlin.If you were funded for a dream artist residency, where would you go, and what would you create?I would go to Latin American countries like Venezuela or México to promote and teach about Creativity and Technology and how to merge them to create amazing art.What's your most prized possession and why?My passport. Because it reminds me of all the lessons I’ve learned, the places I’ve visited, and the amazing people I’ve met. Traveling opens your mind, I think it's the best investment you can make in yourself.Do you collect anything? I used to collect spoons every time I traveled, but I’ve moved so much that I don’t anymore.What is the first record you bought? BJORK “Debut”.Who is your art hero? I have to say Frida Kahlo. She is a Latina and was very ahead of her time. And even though she had a tragic life, that didn’t stop her from creating.If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? I would be a Fashion Designer.What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?Chilling at home with my family watching movies and eating popcorn.What causes are you passionate about?Gender Equality. I always support women by hiring them and creating illustrations about women and creating art that supports women's rights.How do you separate your work life from your home life?I don’t! Haha I work from home and even though I have a home studio, everything is connected all the time. Do you adopt any environmental habits/practices to be more sustainable?I don’t buy as many clothes and shoes as I used to. The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry after oil and gas. So I only buy 1 pair of shoes a year, only for my birthday, and I’m very proud of that.Is there a work lesson you’ve had to learn the hard way?Yes! Saying NO to others that don’t support you or bring any joy in your life.What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? You Do You.If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’ve been dreaming of going to Japan since I was little. I know that day will come.Have you any hidden talents? Yes, I’m a good tennis, racquetball, squash, and ping pong player. I don’t know why, but I’m very good with racquets.How would someone who knows you well describe you? “She is a very creative, fun and joyful person.”What is your go-to comfort food?Arepas! I make them for my twins every Sunday at home and they love it.What movie can you watch over and over?Back To The Future.What is the last show you binged?Ted Lasso.If you had to write your own epitaph in one sentence, what would it say?“Here lies a soul who lived to inspire, with art and creativity as their desire.”What is your favourite quote?“THE WORLD IS A BOOK AND THOSE WHO DO NOT TRAVEL READ ONLY ONE PAGE.”What career advice would you give your younger self?Don’t compare to others, it does not matter what others think of you. Walk your own creative journey with pride and joy.Do you have any tips/advice for other illustrators?Show your work, don’t compare to others, and keep learning.What do you listen to when you work?I love music and I have so many playlists that I'd love to share my Spotify profile so you can check them out.
